IH-54 Blade PVC Mod

Postby outdoors4evr » Wed Oct 31, 2018 7:16 am

I bought an IH-54 blade for my loboy last night. The previous owner had a piece of PVC Pipe attached to the cutting edge (the PVC was cut lengthwise). He claimed that it helped the blade not to pick up the rocks on a gravel driveway. PVC isn't a bad idea, but it seems like it would get brittle in the cold and break.
Anyone heard of this type of a hack for a snowblade?

I was planning to sandwich a piece of flat belt between the blade and the cutting edge so it wouldn't scratch up the concrete pad area. This wouldn't help with the gravel pickup. Any better ideas?

Does the blade have holes for blade skids like the Cub 54A?
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Yes, it has the holes but no skids were included.

I've heard of the PVC pipe trick. I've never used it. I would think it would wear through pretty quick and would cause problems getting through hard packed snow & ice unless you can plow before anybody drives over it. Some guys use a thick piece of polyurethane as a cutting edge so that they won't scratch up concrete. There are some posts on here showing that solution. I have a 3/8" thick Rolled Homogeneous Armor cutting edge (waterjet cut from tank armor stock).

I think I am trying to do less raking in the spring - picking up less rocks with the blade. I don't have any concrete (yet) as the garage is in process of being built. It is too cold to pour the cement apron so that will have to wait until next year.
