154 oil change

Postby yellowcub » Tue Mar 14, 2023 2:33 pm

I went to order up everything for my yearly IH 154 Cub Lo-Boy oil change and got sticker shock. The oil filter cover paper gasket, oil drain plug copper washer and oil filter housing bolt copper washer was like $50 . That can't be right. I said no. Also, I am thinking of changing my oil over to John Deere SAE 30 from Case IH SAE low ash 30 because it is now easier/ cheaper to get. Is there anything bad about that oil?

Use what ever oil you wish. Nothing wrong with JD 30 wt.

Copper washers from hardware store or rubber/neoprene gaskets from auto parts store. Drain plug gaskets, for sure, from auto parts store. Some copper washers you may not need to replace.

While at the auto parts store choose the oil filter that comes with the gasket.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Second the make sure the new filter has a gasket.
Last July I needed a gasket, wife picked one up at dealer. $9.63.
I just checked now and online dealer price is $12.78.

Personally, I seldom replace those copper washers, as long as they are in good condition. For that price, on the gasket, I could surely cut one out.

We have been using IH filters for 50+ years. I order up a few this week and when I got the price of the gasket, I flipped. I found 2 at home so I am good for 2 years. And those copper washers, I just replace every year. Glad I have a lot of used ones around.

Orielly Auto Parts has Wix gasket Part # 15088 for current price $2.68.
When wife came home with gasket it was billed correctly but they gave her the wrong gasket. My old gasket came with tractor a few years ago and it liked to weep a bit. I wanted to see what the OEM gasket was made of.

NAPA typically has a 40% off sale on filters this time of year. Comes with a gasket.
