Wild hogs

It looks like I’m going to have something to hunt on my farm this spring. Wild hogs have shown back up. We had a bunch of them several years ago and then they moved on to somewhere else. Now they are back.

. They are a little hard to see in this game camera picture but a neighbor saw 12 crossing the road onto my farm about a week ago.

Bait em and eliminate em.

Check with your state conservation dept to see what they suggest for eliminating sounders.

Missouri suggests not shooting individual hogs which disperses the hogs rather than keeping them in one area. I think Missouri Dept of Conservation will set up hog traps.

Have watched hog shooting and hog trapping videos from Texas.

Public service announcement! :D

If you (or anyone who reads this) takes a screen shot of a landscape photo, turn your phone on its side to the landscape position so the photo fills your screen!

Ok, back to your regular scheduled program! :D

Oh, why wait till spring? Blast them now!

I definitely won’t wait till spring to try and eliminate them. Baiting has already started. We can shoot them 24/7 here in NC. As soon as I start seeing big groups I’ll set my trap back up. There has been a large population of them in Anson county for years which is just across the Pee Dee River from my farm. The local farmers hate them and have some dog hunters that work on them hard. The population on my farm seems to come and go every couple of years. Looks like this is going to be an up year. They make great sausage and it’s nice to have something to hunt in the spring and summer when I go to the farm to mow grass and work my garden. It’s not uncommon to catch 10-12 in a corral trap in a single night. They are a lot of fun to hunt. A sniper hog light on an ar15 and 8-10 hogs at a corn pile is a lot of fun. They sure do run fast

Killed about an 800 pound boar in Texas, while turkey hunting. I think about half that weight was ticks.

It amazes me that a tick can drill through that hide. I shot a big boar in the California desert hills years ago. The guy I was with used 4 pit bulls to bring them to bay. Exciting and a real workout. The meat was horribly "boar-y"

Some folks trap wild hogs, then pen the smaller ones. Idea is to domesticate the hogs, clean then up and fatten them.

I can remember back in the days when I hunted just for something to do, and did not own one foot of land.

Back then i thought it would be cool if we had them around!

Now that I do not hunt much and have a handful of acres, I am glad they are few and far between around here!

They claim there is some in our county, but I never saw any signs or tracks

I don’t mind having them around. Their rooting around has spurred some small plants to grow in some of my mature timber areas and they have cleaned up some nasty thickets around field edges. They have not caused any damage to my garden plots that I have electric fence around. On the other hand they cause lots of problems for the farmers in the area. They will hit a field shortly after it’s planted and go right down the rows rooting out and eating the seeds. Several people have told me they will ruin the deer hunting but I haven’t seen that. They make great sausage, even the big boars. I hope we never get overrun with them like a lot of places have but as long as the population doesn’t explode I kinda like having them around. We spend a lot of weekends at our farm in the spring and summer and I enjoy hunting them at night when I’m done working for the day. If it works like before they will be on my farm for a year or two and then move on once they work the woods over feeding and rooting around. Then the browse will regrow nicely before they return. They are very smart creatures and not easy to hunt, kinda like turkeys. And they are tough as nails, I’ve seen a big boar take multiple hits with a 12 gauge slug and never slow down
