New-to-Me Metal Lathe - FINISHED

Postby Stanton » Fri Mar 15, 2019 7:34 pm

Attended an auction today (http://farmallcub.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=41&t=103582). I had been looking forward to it for some time now. Sale bill mentioned a couple different metal lathes. The owner, who passed away, was an avid collector, farmer, tinkerer, mechanic and seller of all things farm-related.

Ever since last April, at the NEO CubFest, when Randall suggested I get a small metal lathe, I've been searching once or twice a week on Cr*igslist and online, but most seemed far more than I wanted to pay.

So I showed up in the mud this morning and spied (3) metal lathes. Only one appeared to be in working condition. Usually, an auctioneer NEVER auctions off what I'm interested in until late in the "show". Not so this morning. The very first thing sold was this lathe. It's a South Bend 9B with a 4'-0" bed. It has a 3-jaw chuck mounted, but came with:
  • 4-jaw chuck
  • steady rest
  • faceplate
  • box of cutters
  • extra arbor
  • Jacobs drill chuck

As it arrived home.

Even the light over the lathe works.

IMG_1138.jpg
Partially disassembled and set up in the barn.

As soon as I won the bid, I asked myself, "How are you going to get this out of here with all this mud?!!" So happened that the auctioneer had a Bobcat with lifting forks and set it upright in the bed of the truck. Used every ratcheting strap in the truck to get it secured, then headed home. Out on US 50 Hwy (4-lane), I used my flashers and drove about 30 mph the whole way home (about 5 miles). Got it home safely, disassembled most it and got it slid out of the truck and set up in the barn. Now the fun begins to complete the disassembly, clean, paint and put it back together. I was also pleased that the motor and reversing switch work as well.

And price you may ask. Well, it came home with me for way less than a Benjamin.

Awesome find. You’ll use it more than you know and wonder how you got by all those years without it.

Great find!! South Bend Lathes were built just down the road from me in South Bend, Indiana. I've worked with several guys that used to work there. In fact, I'll get you the contact info for a guy that bought out most of South Bend Lathes parts and inventory. He's probably the most knowledgeable guy you'll ever find. Friends of mine that have South Bend Lathes call him when they need info, help or parts. He'll be a good resource for you.

That is a find! Congratulations. You'll love it I do believe. (Of course if you don't like it you got my number!) Be looking for a set of change gears for it. Maybe Ricky's friend can help you with that.

Since "round" is a fundamental shape in our hobby, you'll be amazed how often you will chuck up an item to polish, drill, turn or whatever the occasion calls for. I have that South Bend 9" as well, mine has the quick change gear box, which is nice, but you'll certainly enjoy that one.
Ricky, I'd like that contact number, as well.

I had a South Bend. I was told that South bend kept records of every lathe sold and had them in file cabinets in a back room. When ordering anything they took the serial number and looked on the card so they knew exactly what you needed. I still have my Atlas 10" in storage but upgraded to a Sheldon 13" quickchange.

Rick, do you still have that lathe you got from me? I’ve often wondered if you ever got it operating or moved it on.

Hi Denny. I actually did and my son-n-law's relation ended up with it. Not sure of it's whereabouts now. That was an antique :{_}:
