MD cylinder sleeve question.

Postby Jeff D. N.E. Wis. » Sat Aug 26, 2017 8:08 pm

I am about to start assembling our MD engine, so I may have more questions later. I was reading the service manual last night in regards to cylinder sleeve replacement. I was aware of the sleeve protrusion above the block deck. It states that it needs to be between .041" & .047" above the crankcase block.

I had an engine re-builder that I have used in the past do this engine also (turn crank, new cam bushings, pull & install new sleeves, etc.). I double checked the sleeve protrusion of mine and it is only .0045". I called him today and he said that the .041" - .047" sounded like an awful lot and didn't think the head gasket was that thick and that most engines with sleeves are at .005".

I don't want to get this put together and run it and find out that the head gasket is leaking and have to do a tear down again.

The question I have for the guys who have worked on these MD's, is that .041" - .047" the correct height needed or will it work as is? Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks. :help:

There are probably more regular posters over on the YT site that work on the gas start Diesels than there are here. You got some useful replies there.

Thanks Jim. I was trying to get as many replies as I could from here, Red Power, & YT.
