1947 Farmall M

Postby nebraskagin » Mon Feb 20, 2017 5:31 pm

I am looking for a service manual for my 1947 Farmall M. Im new and needed 2 post to get into the manuals. I am need of changing my belts and thermostat and flush the system. Im not sure how to change the belts. Looks like someone welded by the pulley so might have trouble loosening to change the belts. Any tips? I also was wondering what the long neck thermostats purpose is compared to a normal one? I have never changed one yet. Thanks

Ginny, Welcome to the best little board on the internet!! That flange that looks like a pulley has a set screw that holds it in place. Take the set screw out and the sheave will turn on the assembly. Probably best to wire brush/clean the threads and use some PB Blaster or Kroil to ensure the sheave will loosen. DO NOT tap the sheave with anything metal--use a soft drift or wood as that cast will crack. It is lefty loosey-- righty tighty so it is pretty straight forward. Easier with hood off too! You will have to thread the belt over the fan blades one at a time until the belt is between the fan and the radiator and then pull it out. Do the same for the generator/alternator belt. Reverse order on reassembly. Although the link is not an M, it does show you the fan and the set screw. Hope that helps--the shop manual is on this site in the pdf manuals on the link I put on the other board!

I'm new here as well, I'm looking forward to learning about my tractor. I just bought a '48 Farmall M. She needs a lot of love but I know it will be worth it.
