m farmall alternator ot charging

after major engine repairs i hooked up the alternator which is not charging. i have 4 wires. two plug binto the alternator. the other one hooked vto the terminal on the alkternator. the last one i don't know wher it goes. if you touch it to the alternator ir sparks. need help. thanks

You may get some help if you post what kind of alternator it is. Not much detail to go on in the info you posted. All we have to go on is what you tell us, we can't see what you do unless you describe it to us. So far I understand you have an alternator that doesn't work and four wires beyond that it's just guessing.
