The manual steering Ms I have driven handled quite nicely. Wheels were set as close as they would go.

I have an H and my grandads Super M. He put fire craters in the SM and that thing will flat PULL. I enjoy my H but the sm is alot.more tractor. It has wide front end, live hydraulics and fixing to mount a 3pt hitch. Very nice tractor for working. If I had to choose between 2 I would go with the sm. Most hs I know of do not have live hydraulics and most SMs I know of do. That factor on top of having close to twice the horsepower ans weight sm hands down. Around here an H is about 1200 and sm is about 1500. If they both have 3 point hitches add about 200 but I have seen plenty of narrow front SMs with hitches go for less.

As an update I ended up getting a super m and it runs flawless and starts in the cold great. Only problem is it has a slight head leak and I get a little antifreeze in the oil. Also got a free furgison to-30 that didn't run but was free. All new electrics and it works great!

I was going to suggest maybe looking at 560's. I love my Super M but if you were willing to spend up to $5000 you could definitely get into a 560. I've seen many under $3000. For me it would be a drive though because Im in the north east and 560's are over priced here. I would have to drive out to Kansas or other mid western states but it would be worth it.
560 would have live PTO, live hyds, T/A, and lots of power. If fuel consumption isn't a concern then I would get a 560 gas. Diesel is great though. I personally wouldn't touch a IH diesel tractor prior to the 460/560 because the gas start diesels get very pricy when they need an overhaul and/or repair.

But congrats on your super M. Mine is a very, very late 53 Louisville SM. Came with live hyds, and a dealer installed Char lynn power steering. And one of the previous owners already overhauled it to 450 specs at 281ci.

I've got an M. I really like it, it's basically my mowing tractor, but it'll kill you by days end just because of the weight and no power steering. I'd much prefer an H, but the M was the right price at the right time, so that's what I've got. Like all the above posts if you're looking for pulling power get an M, something smaller and easier to operate look at an H.

My dad has a tricycle M tractor and a few H tractors but we love the front loader on the m. And I bought my super m wide front end tractor. Mine's got power steering .after driving dads without power steering ie. After a few years driving that you will have power to steer.lol.so I prefer M. In my case the super m
