Broke An Oil Ring

Postby arlen » Sun Mar 28, 2021 9:31 pm

Getting ready to put the pistons in the bores, and for the life of me I couldn’t find my ring pliers. It was a Sunday, and I kinda live in the middle of nowhere, so I had this bright idea to grind a couple notches in an old snap ring pliers....mistake. Maybe it was a little too flimsy and it twisted, but I broke an oil ring. . I think it might be a pain in the butt to get a replacement set from Steiners. The ones they have listed are not the same as the ones that ship with their sleeve kits.
Summit racing has a few Hasting sets (made in USA to boot)
Kinda thinking of these:
https://www.summitracing.com/parts/hsn-828

Or these:

https://www.summitracing.com/parts/hsn-2c828

My 2 compression rings are 3/32 and the oil ring is 3/16. Bore is 3.125
My question is it ok to use any set like that as long as the bore, and ring thickness is the same?
The hasting sets are 2 compression rings and 1 oil ring, just like the Steiner ones.
If it’s ok, I’ll just get a complete set for all 4 cylinders, since they are made in USA and probably higher quality.
Which brings us the next question... looks like the more expensive set triple chrome, the lesser one is phosphated. Would there be any advantage for my application?
The more expensive set has a stainless oil ring, which maybe is an advantage.
I guess I will also be in the market for a new piston ring pliers too :D

Thanks for the reply! So as long as the bore, and ring thicknesses match, I can use them? I was wondering if they are designed for specific piston or something like that.
The cheaper ones that I linked are phosphate coated cast compression rings and chrome oil rings.

As long as the dimensions match, they should work. The cheaper one should work for, why pay extra for high end compression rings you're not going to use. You can sometimes buy rings for one cyl. but for $33 it's not worth the hassle.

Thanks!
None of them seem to publish the width of the ring. Obviously that is the least critical dimension, but I'm hoping that the Hasting ones are close.

I'm not sure what you mean by "width" of the ring, the listing clearly states that the oil ring is 3/16" wide. I don't know the width of the oil ring groove in your new pistons but if it's 3/16", you should be in good shape. If not, keep looking.

I would call the 3/16 dimension the thickness. I was referring to other dimension as width, as in how far it would penetrate into the ring groove.

Why not just call the place you bought the pistons from and explain the mishap, and see if you can buy another ring?

I will if the Hasting ones are not a match.

Thanks for that link. They look like they have a few things that Steiner doesn’t. I will look at them closer when I jump into the front end rebuild ( when I get this damn engine back together :D )

OK, Arlen, I didn't understand your question. Generally, the ring groove depth will be pretty standard, they're usually cut deeper than necessary, you will likely find they fit fine.

Thanks! I would have known for sure on Tuesday if Fedex would not have lost my next day air package. Thursday now, and no rings...it's always something. :(

New rings came and they fit perfectly. The oil rings are a more complex 3 piece design.
Got the pistons in the bores this morning and the rods all torqued down with no issues.
It’s starting to look like an engine again.
