Farmall B Rebuild

Postby Darren » Sat Nov 28, 2020 8:38 pm

I acquired my first Farmall B about 5 years ago. It runs and is in decent shape. It has all sheet metal, a few have dings. Most of the gaskets on the tractor leak. I want to rebuild it and get the paint color correct. Any warnings or suggestions to get started?

I would tackle the rusty right rear rim issue.

Then the easy to fix oil drips. Probably leave the rest of the drips alone until a major overhaul.

What's wrong with the color?
I have an excuse. CRS.

The color looks good from a distance but it isn't the correct red, it is too dark. You can see the color mismatch with the battery box being the correct red. I am considering a major overhaul, thinking that I don't know where to stop.

Stop before you run out of money.

What are you going to do with the tractor?

It is just a toy that I pull out of the garage a few times a year and drive around the block. No real plans, just something to tinker with in the garage.

First off, it's a pretty nice looking "B"! When possible, I like to start out by making all mechanical repairs and repair oil leaks before any cosmetics. Once everything is operating well, without serious leaks, then I consider making it pretty. Yes, it means taking some items apart more than once but that's better than having to take it back apart after a nice paint job.

Unless it's really blowing smoke or knocking or you just won the lottery, wouldn't look at overhaul! Very durable engine! Grandps' running since '52 overhaul, doing good! New sleeves, pistons, and bearings are pricey, plus valve job while it's apart!!
