Flywheel Ring Gear

My 1944 H has been chewing up starter clutches so I decided to replace the flywheel ring gear. I was nervous about splitting the tractor but it turned out to be not too bad of a job.

I had seen a video by a woman named Rachel where she heated the new ring gear with a torch. I noticed a little note in the service manual that said it should be heated to 500 - 550 F on a plate or in an oven. That getting it too hot with a torch could ruin the temper.

So into the house I went and put it in the oven at 550. It worked great, the gear dropped right onto the flywheel and I didn't have to beat it with a hammer like in the video.

In hindsight I could have done it on the gas grill which has a thermometer in the hood. But if I had the house wouldn't have that delicious roasted ring gear smell!

The gas grill would have worked nicely. Way back when, working in the garage, we would heat gently, moving the torch around the full circle of the gear and just drop it on. We really didn't get the gear very hot, it doesn't take much. It probably took less than 5 min.

Rule of thumb: When a Rachel video says something, and another source says something else, go with the something else.
