Farmall C gas tank

I need a measurement for the L bracket welded to the front left side of a C gas tank. Is there anyone not too far from Danbury CT who has a tank not on a tractor, or a tractor where the hood is removable, that would let me take a quick measurement? Coffee and doughnuts on me-

I'd ASSUME that they were symmetrical, it looks like it should be. I got the tractor without the bracket, and there are no witness marks where it once was. I'd hate to weld the new one up and find out that I'd missed.

Weld on a gas tank?

Yep, weld. The tank has not seen gas for a year and a half, so what is left in there would Seem hard;y hardly enough for a decent phump.The joint between the top and the bottom of the tank is resistance welded, not soldered, so no risk of destroying the joint. I’ll wash the inside of the tank with soap and water, and then leave the garden hose in the tank, let it run for a couple of hours, and then leave it full during the welding process. The weld is on the outside of the tank so there is a great reduction in the risk right there. It will be a TIG weld. so no open flame. If I was really worried, I’d throw a hose from a nitrogen tank into the gas tank and set the regulator in a few psi, but I’m not. What could go wrong?

The C and Super C tanks are different. However, I believe the hoods are the same. So this aspect of the tanks should be the same.

As I recall, This piece is welded to the pinch weld where the 2 halves of the tank are joined. It goes way out near the front corner of the seam. Filling the tank with water shouldn't interfere with needed heat for welding and should make welding safer.

I know a guy who got killed welding on a Harley tank that had been empty for ten years. He thought it was fine since it hadn’t seen liquid in that long. Be careful!!! Tig welding may not have sparks like other welds but it is an electric current. Don’t want to see anybody get hurt is all.

I really appreciate your concern. I absolutely agree that welding gas tanks is serious business, and without serious precautions, a fine way to blow yourself up. Thanks.
