Red Fever

Postby customcutter » Mon May 01, 2023 1:30 pm

Red Fever, yeah I think I've got it. Started working on Pa's Super AV a few months ago got it running and pieced enough together to hill some rows and used a Cole Duplex planter to plant the garden with last month. I started looking for another tractor back in November and there aren't many around in central Fl. We went to the Flywheelers in Feb. and there was a man there with a Super A and a 100. The Super A was kinda rough but ran well, and the 100 would crank but was "wide open". He said he thought it was the governor. I was new to Farmall's (still am) and shied away from both tractors.

I bought a Super A last month up in South Carolina and brought it home to work on it. It needs the gas tank cleaned, lined, and fuel system cleaned out of rust. Also the battery is dead. I was thinking about converting to 12v but found a 6v battery at Rural King for about half the price of other retailers, so probably going to stay with 6v system until I start having issues with the generator or voltage regulator. Also found some play in the final drive, but may wait a while to see if any issues develop there as well.

I went over this AM to see about buying some front tool bars from the man at Flywheelers. He only lives about 5 miles from me. While I was there, he said he had stripped the Super A down to parts. He also said that he had replaced the spring in the governor and since then the 100 would only backfire. He told me he'd take $600 for it, half of what he was asking at the Flywheelers, he was tired of messing with it. It's in decent condition, and I think it's probably just a tooth off on the timing is why it's backfiring now. He mentioned he has his eye on a Super H and was a little short on cash, so another reason for selling. Wish me luck!

Oh, by the way, what's the cure for Red Fever?

Thanks, Ken

Love my 100, mowing and snow plowing machine (not that you'll need that in FL). I bought a Cub, then the 300, and then the 100 told wife was done unless I find Grandpa's 340. Well doubt I'll do that but starting to get an itch for a 200. I have a thing for series and knew when I bought the 300 and like the looks of the 100, the 200 and 400 would probably follow.

We actually had a 2-3" accumulation of snow just east of Tampa back in the winter of 76-77. My son was a new born about 2 months old. That was the only time I saw snow on the ground here in central Fl.

I'm going to try and go pick up the 100 tomorrow, if things work out.

Yes, picked it up Thursday, and got it running yesterday. It's in the Timing a 100 thread.
