Help locating head bolt studs - C123

Postby Butterbean » Fri Sep 09, 2022 8:26 am

Good morning, I'm having a difficult time locating the head stud bolts that hold the rocker arm assembly on my Super A. I've tried Steiner and they recommended CaseIH. That didn't work. I snapped one of these when torquing (45#) during reassembly. I've tried NAPA, no luck, and didn't think Autozone or O'Reilly would have it. I've search a few others online and just not finding what I think is the correct part. It is 4 3/4" in length. I found some advertised on Ebay saying they'd fit the Super A. I ordered but when they arrived they didn't fit. Diameter was wrong so I am returning them. Any thoughts?

I think 45# is a big part of your problem. Where did you get that figure?

If I recall correctly, the two studs that go through the rocker arm assembly are the same two that hold the valve cover on. These were missing on my B Farmall when I got it so, I bought a length of all thread rod, measured accordingly, and cut to fit. I haven't checked to see if the C113 and C132 are identical concerning this matter. I don't think these two need to be torqued to 45 ft lbs; only the head bolt nuts.

I have learned the hard way there are a lot of variations of and applications specific parts for the c123. I would not count on anything that says it is good for A-140 to be correct. May times you need the engine sn to get the correct parts.

I my manual the head bolts are listed as:

20832R1 bolt replacing 364789r1 for engine sn 39400 and above
24433 stud for engine sn 39399 and below
4097da nut
58516h washer 39400 and above
45574d stud for the valve cover

Jim, I put Mr. Google on it that morning. I certainly won't tighten to 45# next time.

Club Bud. I didn't think about thread rod because one end is fine and the other is coarse. Thinking about it I can see that it would work. Just change the fine thread nuts on top of valve cover for coarse.

Super A. Thanks for the heads up about Messicks. I'll check them out. I still have several things to buy during this process.

Jeff & Inalram. Thank you for your information. I'm sure it will help.
