SA Seat Identification

Postby aj_schmidt17 » Sun Aug 14, 2022 12:19 pm

Hello all,

Just bought my first Super A and was looking for some help regarding the seat style. The spring was broken when purchased and I was looking for a replacement but after I started looking I wasn’t able to find another SA with this style seat. Has anyone ever seen a seat like this on a SA?

From what I know it’s a ‘48. The serial plate is missing and there are no rivets from where it would have been. The previous owner had it for 40+ years and said everything’s the same way as when he bought it. I’m looking to slowly restore this tractor so if the seat mount is incorrect I’ll keep that in mind when updating it.

Thanks for the help!

Aftermarket Monroe seat, not super common but they show up on some Super As. The serial number plate was on the original left seat bracket, which was removed to install this seat. You won't typically find that seat spring listed for a Super A. There were other IH tractors that could have Monroe seats, not this exact model. They would have the same spring(s). Almost any model larger than a Super C in the early/mid 1950s could have had a seat with a compatible spring (C, Super C, SUper H, Super M, etc.).

Thanks for the help, I thought it was an aftermarket seat just couldn’t find a lot of info to figure out what it was.

I appreciate it!

By the way, the original springs had 3, 4, or 5 little notches near the upper end. They corresponded to the weight operator each was intended for. Most owners now days probably need 7 or 8 notches.

Man, that thing cobbles up a nice platform worse than the turd that was on my super A when I bought it.

You can see mine in the link below.

Luckily my mounts and serial tag was still there!

The proper seat uses leaf type springs on each side of the seat.

I have the same exact seat on mine, been looking to replace the spring and shock absorber as it goes all the way down when I sit on it and gets very bumpy.
