1948 Farmall Super A

Postby Sterff89 » Sun Oct 24, 2021 5:59 pm

Here are a few picture of my 48 Super A I picked up this summer for $900. To say it was in rough condition was an understatement. It was so dirty that I honestly thought someone painted parts of it black. From the baling wire holding everything together to the bent front axle I had to do a fair amount of work to it. At one point in it's life it had a serious front end collision and the left side axle tube was cut off and someone made new holes for the center pin and drilled them crooked. It took me awhile to figure that one out. It needed all new tires, wiring harness, rebuilt magneto, all the fluids were changed amongst many other things. I also have all the lift arms for it and just installed the front weights this weekend. At some point I think Ill have to go through the transmission because its pretty noisy. I bought this one to have back up for my 51 Super A which I use for my potato patch.

You got a good deal on it. It’s very complete.
I picked up a ‘53 for $1k and it wasn’t that complete or did it have anything to go with it.
Mine has a noisy trans too that rattles in neutral and reverse. It does have a constructive use to the Rattle though, I push in the clutch and wait for the rattle to stop then change gears so I never grind a gear. ;)
I believe it’s a reverse gear bearing or the slider worn and letting it rattle. I’ll get to it one day if I can crawl out from under all my to-do’s.

Yeah, I'm surprised how well it looks and runs now. I knew it needed a lot of work going into it but, I plan on just using it as is for now. It only really makes a lot of noise in 4th gear.

4th isn’t really a usable gear so no big deal.

True but the speed in 4th for a tractor is kinda sketchy. I also wince a little looking at the wear on my ag tires after a run into town with the haywagon. Even then 4th is way too fast. If someone fell off at that speed...

For me all depends on how tight that steering is!

10 / 11 mph is not that fast! Especially on the road!
