140 L 59 Mule Drive Question

Postby F.POLLIO » Fri Apr 16, 2021 4:20 pm

I have a Woods L 59 mower attachment for a 140. About twice a season the mule drive needs removed to allow reversing the draw bar for mounting a 193 moldboard plow. Everything is ok when removing the drive but when it gets reinstalled there are 6 spacer washers that fit between the drive and rear housings. They came with it and are shown in the Woods parts breakdown. I have a difficult time trying to keep them placed and starting the mounting bolts through the drive frame at the same time. They do get dropped a lot even with some of the bolts screwed in. The distance between the rear housings measure 29 inches, the drive is 28/5/8". The washers are thick enough to fill the gap but are very time consuming installing. My question is this situation normal for one of those drives and is there some way to make it easier to install? Thank You.

Epoxy the washers together and then to the mule drive. You will have to clean everything well first.

I kinda went through that same scenario when I bought my 68 cub in the early 2000's, however I have the fast hitch.

Taking that mower off along with the mule drive contraption for field work was, well, not something I wanted to do much of!

And while I did not have a set of cultivators yet, I wanted to be able to cultivate with my tractor too.

The best idea I had was to buy another tractor for a dedicated mower tractor!

And......

The mule drive and belly mower that came with my 68 cub has not been on since!!!

To this day I still can not imagine why ANYONE buying a tractor to plow and disk with would buy a belly mower too!

Good luck!

If you have much garden, buy you a set of cultivators for the 140!

Sam, Thank You, you are correct that another machine would eliminate the situation of removal and installing the drive. Ironically I purchased it with the mower installed, then decided to use it for plowing and disking. Also I have a 1A-60 grader blade that requires the drive to be removed when it is mid mounted. I have a friend that thinks I am creating a lot of extra work changing the attachments and has suggested having a tractor for every one of them. I am really ok with having to go through the moves and after some experience it is not too awfully bad knowing what tools are needed. The biggest problem so far has been those confounded spacer washers and will try Don's advice using epoxy. If that will not hold them in place I may try tack welding them to the drive.

" The best idea I had was to buy another tractor for a dedicated mower tractor!"

Today I got on 4 different tractors to do different jobs My least favorite job is switching implements.
When you only have 9 horsepower you need to know the names of all of the ponies!

Welding them came to mind for me also. :)

Maybe have someone (if you dont have one) with a lathe make you custom 1 piece spacers! If so make a few extra!

Since my plans was to use a set of 144 cultivators, having a belly mower was not a option!

Swapping between a belly mower and cultivators takes almost as much time as the work to be done with each implement!
