New to me 140

I recently purchased a 1964 140 from a semi-local guy. When I got it home the grandson wanted a ride. He got a short ride. It needed some tinkering here and there so we started at the carburetor. After the carb came an oil change and a tuneup. Next came hydraulic oil change. All of his over a span of about 3 weeks. Both the son and I work out of town and have limited time to work on it. It was getting time to put corn in the ground so the son came over on Saturday to finish changing the fluids and plant. When I backed it out of the shop to begin the fluid change it moved about 3 feet and locked up tight.
I’m learning lessons the expensive way. I know I should have checked all of the fluids immediately after getting it home or before I bought it. The transmission was FULL of water. Both rear tires are locked up. A good friend of mine, is a very good mechanic but has limited experience on Farmalls, is coming to help with the project. He’s thinking pinon bearing. We’ll see. After repairs it’s for sale.
This was not bought from an individual but a buyer-seller, I guess he don’t check his out before selling, I don’t know, I would. I am NOT blaming him. I should’ve done my part and checked it out better before buying.
Before before buying I had looked at some online from Mr Tim Fail in Pikeville NC. I really wish I would have done business with him first. Him and his dad are stand up great guys. The wife and I got home last night after 1400 miles in 2 days with a 15 year newer 140 in tow. This is a dependable solid tractor.

I would start by taking the top off the transmission and inspecting what is in there. It is easy to do and may tell you something about what to do next. If that doesn't tell the story, drain the transmission and remove the PTO for another look. Whatever the problem, you should be able to see it one place or the other.

Occasionally my cub will get stuck between two gears in the transmission, and I have to play with it some to get it back out!

If you jack the rear tires off the ground, will they spin by hand?
Try to turn one, the other should spin the opposite direction!

Try that, if they turn with hand pressure look at the trans!

I have jacked one side at a time. The one raised will not turn with the other on the ground. Have not raised both at once yet.

Both tires have to be up off the ground at the same time!

have a cub here that locks up just like that! Bearings in transmission were out and the pieces get caught between gear teeth and lock up,---go the other direction and they usually let go. Mine was a mess inside but after cleaning all the ground up bearing parts out and putting in new bearings all is good again.
Check the transmission on your 140! could be bearings, also could have froze up and broke something in there that dropped down between gears.

I work out of town and will leave at 3 am and return Friday. Will try to look into it this weekend and post what I find. Spent the afternoon changing all fluids in the new one getting it ready to cultivate. I have about an acre of garden and two more of corn for pig feed and don’t want to tackle it with the Merry Tiller again. I need to get the side dresser mounted before long also. It’s going to be a busy couple of weeks. What do you pros run in the transmission. I’ve heard HyTrans and I’ve heard 90w

Going to pull the top off of the transmission this morning to see if I can determine the problem. I’ve worked with Chevy granny low 4 speeds before but nothing like this. Do you just put it in neutral and lift it off? Or does the shifter come off like the Chrvy first?

Got the cover off of the transmission. Don’t see anything obvious in there. Trying to get the PTO cover off and can’t get it off. Is there something besides the 7 bolts in the back and looks like one finder bolt is in the pto cover. Bumped it with a rubber hammer but it won’t budge

Have you tried jacking up both back wheels and seeing if either will move, as suggested by SamsFarm? It is probably a good step for before you pull the PTO. All the suggestions so far have been things you can do to narrow down where it is locked up. Taken together, they should point you to the internals of one housing.

The PTO has 2 dowel pins that control alignment of the PTO to the transmission housing. Dowel pins are often tight. They need to be to do their job. You may need to get between the PTO and transmission housings with a thin pry (e.g. screwdriver or putty knife) to get them apart. Be sure to drain the transmission before you pull the PTO.

Yes sir I have done everything suggested. Something has the ring ring gear carrier locked up. The tires would spin in opposite directions but carrier doesn’t move. If it was pinion related I would think that it would still move a little. It doesn’t budge at all

But reaching in trying to wiggle the pinion, it would not move either.

Go back to the transmission. Double check that all gears are in neutral. (They can move out of the neutral position while the cover is off.) There are 3 sliding gears, 1-2, 3-4, and R. If the ring/pinion still will not move, tie or block the clutch pedal down in the fully released position. See if the ring/pinion are now able to move.
