140 spark plugs

Postby M6Scout » Mon Jan 11, 2021 7:25 am

Good morning folks,
Just picked up my first 140, I grew using only Cubs.
I’m told the 140’s power is amazing. Anyways, which spark plugs, wires, points & condenser do you find to be the best for them. Also which engine & driveline oils, & weights I’m upstate NY and will be using during summer/winter months.

Thank you

Bob C.

tune up parts same as a cub, just different plug wires, oils vary according to the manual depending upon year of the 140, as far as the driveline if it is a nice dry one no leaks you can use Hy Trans in everything, if its older and leaks some gear oil

In the past year I have picked up some of the bigger iron. The power is nice. You have a be careful of the size. Places the cub could go the 140 may not - like under tree branches or I have to remove the muffler to get it in my barn.

The engine info in not in the parts manual like in the cub. You have to look up the engine model c-123 parts manual for the engine. The engine for the 130 and on 140 are the same but some parts are different. The engine is different than the A,and 100 so be careful buying parts off eBay that say "fits A, 100, 130 140." without checking for yourself.

I try to find nos ignition parts from the Standard brand off ebay. They were high quality and made in the USA.

I started using napa for ignition parts. I had some problems with the IH points and capacitors.

Great info!
I went back in older posts, (2008) an old timer mentioned stick with iH OEM. Over 50 yrs of using his tractors on his farm. He’s tried substitutes and always found the OEM equipment to preform the best. So I went with D16 plugs.

Thanks again for all your replies

I used IH ignition parts for year. I recently tried NAPA Echlin points and condenser. The quality seemed much better.

I ditched the points and condenser and installed a Pertronix solid state ignition over 10 years ago and have not had to touch it since.

I think there is great information and suggestions on this site. You still have to decide if the information and suggestions apply to you and your tractor. I think the OEM points and condensers are not the same as those sourced by IH in 2008. I had failures over the past year or two on OEM points and condensers. I switched to NAPA parts

If you use your tractor a great deal like, like every day for long hours, the cooler D16 plug is a good option. If it is not all of the time a hotter plug like the D-21 may be a better option.

The oils that are around today were not conceived of when these engines & drive trains were designed and built. If modern oils were around at the time they would have been specified in the manuals. I do not even consider using OEM recommended single-weight oils in the manuals and changing the oil with the weather.

There is great info here. It is not law or IH dogma. Use your judgment to see if it works for you. A lot of times I will add "This worked for me" or "I found on my tractors" . I assume my experience with my tractors is not comprehensive. I also am in a moderate zone and do not get the extreme cold or heat or high altitude that other members face.
