Good evening all, and here’s to a Happier New Year!
Which is the preferred method of seeding, beans, sweet corn and possibly sunflower seeds. The front (mid section) or 1 point type seeders. Everything else I transplant because of the short seasons in up state NY.
Thanks
Bob C.

Re: Preferred Seeders
I think the 184 type planter is the most versatile. Do you have a Cub or Super A?

Re: Preferred Seeders
I think its mostly personal pref. --- First which one do you have the plates for? --- might have to use different planter for different crops, unless you get enough plates for one planter.
I never used the planets but a lot of guys do and like them. They are probably best suited for smaller seed. For corn beans and sunflowers, a regular planter works great.
I use a cut down IH 450 ground lift planter here, cubs pull it just fine, I cut it down to make 2 row planter out of it due to it working better and easier to work in smaller places.--- hard to turn 4-row around but ole cub pulled it before I cut it down.----wouldnt want any hills but on flat land---no problem.

Re: Preferred Seeders
I started with a earthway push by hand planter, moved up to the 172 runner planter, then graduated to deere 71 planter units.
With a plate type planter I have planted;
Sweet corn
Field corn
Green beans
Sugar snap peas
Sun flowers
I plan on experimenting with planting oats and wheat with a plate planter too!
It helps if you have a heafy stack of planter plates!
I been using the corn type plates.
The jd 71s are similar to the ih 185s!
It will be time to plant before we know it!

Re: Preferred Seeders
The JD 71 and IH 185 would be Cadillac planters. Double disk openers are more forgiving if the seedbed isn't perfect.

They are.... Well, maybe not cadillac! They cut through or roll over trash / organic matter.
There has been plenty of times using the cub 172 runner planter that a hidden chunk of sod got stuck in front of the runner, you blink and next thing you know there is a big trench and the seeds are not covered.
I used to think of a coulter in front of the runner on the 172, but went the deere 71 route!
