Bead Set Tire Pressure?

Postby Stanton » Sun Nov 10, 2019 9:49 am

I read the earlier thread about tire beads not setting, but had a question specific to tire inflation pressure: what is the maximum PSI you should go to set a bead for a rear tire with tube?

My rear tires are 11.2-36, farm auction purchase. I worked on the first one, inflating it to 30 PSI and had 2 places that wouldn’t set. Deflated it, set aside. Worked on the second one, inflating it to 40 PSI, walked away from it and it fully seated in about 5 minutes. Went back to the first one and re-inflated it to 40 PSI and one of the 2 sides seated shortly after.

Have any of you exceeded 40 PSI?

I’ve used a good slippery mix of dish soap and water.

Let me know your experiences...thanks.

If the beads and rims are clean and lubricated it shouldn't take a lot of pressure to get them to seat. Tire sidewalls generally have a maximum pressure on them and it's a good idea not to exceed that when seating the bead. If that thing blows it's just like a bomb.

One thing that will keep a bead from climbing up is if the tube is pinched under it. When it does eventually climb it had a pretty good chance of pinching a hole in the tube, usually at an inconvenient time and location. If I wasn't getting those tires to seat at 20PSI I'd be looking carefully for a pinched tube.

If you don't get the tire to seat after 2 or 3 tries.
I have an excuse. CRS.
