Throttle/idle problem

Postby BullDAWG » Wed Aug 21, 2019 4:35 pm

On my 1950 SA I can't adjust the throttle linkage correctly. When I adjust the rod going from the carb to the govenor I get 1 of 2 problems by only turning the rod end 1/2 a turn (you can only adjust it 180 deg. at a time). but on one setting I get the right top end rpm but then when I lower the control rod to low the rpm's barley go down. If i turn the rod back 180 deg. then I get low rpm's but at full throttle my rpm's are low. What am I doing wrong or is there another adjustment I'm not doing????

Have you adjusted your air/fuel mixture screw?

check the rest of the linkage for wear and governor spring, they do get stretched out from old age

Yes I have a Carter carb but have rebuilt it and adjusted it.

and TST, thanks I think that is probably the problem as I have tried adjusting the gov. and like I said 1 turn on the rod is either too much or too little after turning where the rod linkage connects from the carb. to the gov. arm. Its a 1950 SA and when I got it it had the original wires (even the plug wires were IH) so I don't think anything was ever replaced on this tractor unless it broke... And even then it was usually welded n held together with duct tape or baling wire LOL...

I have a cub and was having problems similar to your. I adjusted gov and air mixture screw and I also had to adjust the stopper screw. Seemed like it took forever to get it all lined out. But it can be done just make sure she is up to temp before doing anything or you will be fighting yourself. Good luck and keep us posted.
