Weird thing I found while cleaning my 140

I was cleaning my 140 today and found a lot of debris stuck between the left rear fender and the transmission housing. After i blew out the leaves and dirt I noticed there was something still in that slot. Thinking it was dirt and grease I tried digging it out, but it was one solid piece. I was thinking it might be a soggy piece of wood, but couldn't get it to budge. With a long thin screwdriver I was able to pry it from both the trans case side and the inner surface of the fender. I did finally get it out in one piece and it looks to be some sort of wool or cotton or asbestos matt. It has perfectly straight edges and square cutouts to let it fit perfectly in that space between the fender and trans. It's grease soaked so I can't tell what color it was originally, but it did keep keep that area it was in clean and rust free. So I'm wondering if this pad is supposed to be there? I can't imagine someone made this, with perfect cutouts to clear the bolt heads and let sit flat in that slot. I can post a pic tomorrow if no one is familiar with what I'm talking about, but has anyone seen anything like this on their 140? I've got a parts manual on the way, but it won't be here until Monday.

I think it was a piece of felt put in there where built but can tell you the purpose someone else will know

Yeah, it does look like a thick piece of felt. Weird. Guess I'll try to dry it out thoroughly and then work some motor oil or WD40 into it and put it back. Here's what I'm talking about........

Yeah, who would have thought that IH would be addressing NHV (noise, harshness, vibration) on a tractor in 1970? They were obviously decades ahead of their time.

Actually 1939. As far as I know, it was in there from the start.

Hi Jim,

Yeah, you're right. I looked in my '40 A manual and although it doesn't show the felt pad in the fender pic.......it does list it. Luckily the pad on my 140 was soaked with oil instead of water......but I imagine more than a few fenders have rusted thru because of it. It was probably put on to stop operators from dropping small things, like nuts and bolts, down there.........making for PO'd future buyers. Weird.

w30bob, I found the same on my F100 when I went through that tractor. Its been a bit since then, but I believe I found replacement felt at Graingers (#2FHG7 x Felt Sheet, F7, 3/4 In T, 12 x 12)

Yeah a piece of jute padding added at the factory. I've removed several in good shape from 140s. Other tractors......they're usually long gone. I always remove them and leave them out as I don't really see much of a need other than something to hold moisture. Its not like the fender is thin enough metal to vibrate badly. And if you're worried about debris and stuff getting in the crack down there, just remove the fender each winter and clean it out. That is what an old timer near us did on his 140 every year when he put it up for the winter. It sure was a nice tractor too!!

Yeah, I think I will leave it out for now. I hear what Jim's saying about rusting, but that area on mine is pristine. Most likely because it was kept in the barn and not outside. I'm not sure what that pad is really supposed to accomplish......it's hard to believe they were really worried about noise or vibration on a tractor......but who knows?

you could always replace it with rubber, old piece of conveyor belt, something that wont hold water
