Postby wfs43 » Mon Mar 11, 2024 6:01 pm

1947 Farmall Cub serial number 627. Hydraulic fluid getting into crankcase oil. Hydraulic lift working. Replaced o-rings and seals in hydraulic pump. Refilled hydraulic oil in reservoir. Hydraulic lift not working. Any suggestions?

fill plug out kep cycling the lift lever back and forth to get the air out, some go fast, some are slow to work, did you put the wave washer in the pump in the right direction ? only works one way

Hi,
Below is a page from the 1949 Cub owner's manual, telling how to fill the Touch Control, and remove the air from the system.
Be sure to do what it says in paragraph 4, to remove the air. The arms should go through their full travel 10 - 12 times.
The 10 weight motor oil mentioned in the manual for the Touch Control was changed later to Case IH Hy-Tran fluid. It is sold at Case IH dealers. It is thin fluid.
There are other brands, be sure it works with IH hydraulic systems before buying one.
Be sure to check the fluid the last time with the arms in the rear, or down position, the manual says.
It will be overfilled to fill it with the arms ahead.

Gentlemen,
New IH Cub owner SN#244945. The little tractor seems to run good but TC is “very noisy.” I removed the plug, attempted to add fluid but most of it ran out the side. Left the plug out and moved the lever back and forth 10-12 times and left in rearward position. More fluid came out. I can’t tell if it has enough fluid or not. Relaxed plug and system still noisy. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Needles to say I’m not very mechanical but I’d love to have it working correctly. Thanks

Hi Shilohcub,
Cub serial number 244945 is a 1974 Cub, if you didn't look it up already.
The serial number list is at the top of the page, at Cub Info.

The Touch Control pump on Cubs does make some noise. It can be a whining sound.
It should be easy to see if the unit is full to the filler plug hole. Use a light and look in it.
It can be down slightly from the hole is ok also.
There is part of the casting just below the hole, look in with a light, the fluid may be back in 1" or so.
A plastic funnel with a made on plastic tube, for putting fluid in car automatic transmissions works well on the Cub Touch Control, the tube has a curve, if they still make them that way, so the funnel is somewhat up.
A fluid change might help it run quieter, but I'm not sure. I remember one being noisy when started in cold weather, the fluid is thicker when cold. It got quieter when warm. The fluid might be too thick in your Cub, if it makes much noise.
They hold less than 2 quarts to change the fluid, 3 1/2 Pints, the manual says.
The instructions for changing the fluid are on the page I posted above.
I sent you a PM, you get to it at the top of the page. :)
