Broken radiator overflow line

Postby capefarm » Sun May 07, 2023 11:47 am

I realize this is a minor problem, but it's still one I would like to repair: somehow over time and without being aware of it the radiator overflow line got pushed back to come into contact with the fan blades. Eventually the abrasion wore through leaving about 7" of intact tube down from the radiator top. It appears to be thin-walled brass tubing, and I can just get to it between the fan blades. Temporarily secured to the radiator with thin copper wire. Does anyone know of a fix that doesn't involve taking the whole hood/gas tank off?

Slip a piece of 1/4 ID rubber tubing over the raw end of the brass and run it down through the clip at the bottom of the radiator.

Hi,
There is supposed to be a clip at the bottom of the radiator, at the right side, to hold the bottom end of the overflow tube.
Below is a listing at TM Tractor showing it, and where goes, it should be at the bolt in the picture, then the tube should fit through the hole in the shroud.

While you are working there in that area, you could also oil the fan hub, if you haven't. It can get low on oil if nobody puts oil in it, then the bearing can wear, or people have had the fan seize.
It tells how in the 1949 Cub owner's manual, on page 28.
I use a clean pump oil can to pump new motor oil into the hub. :)

Of course. And thank you all!
The clip is still there, and I'm grateful to know about the fan hub oil, too.

The tubing will hold you until you take the hood/fan off for some other reason. If at that point you want to replace the entire overflow, here’s the solution…
