Battery Size for a 49 Cub
I recently acquired a non-op 49 cub. Overall it appears everything is present and mechanically functional. There is a hand crank that works and spins free as well as a battery box (with a missing top). I believe this is a 6v as it appears original, but how should I confirm this? And is there a recommended size for a 6v? (I saw a recommendation for a '48 to use BAT7244, so I'm guessing it is the same)

If it is original then yes it is 6 volt, positive ground. My ‘51 has been converted to 12 volt, positive ground. I can’t help you with the part number but since you have the box you have all you need.

The original Cub battery box will accommodate a 6 volt, Group 1 or Group 19L battery. If you have a Rural King nearby, check their prices.

Re: Battery Size for a 49 Cub
I recently bought a 1949 Cub as well. I ended up putting a Group 1 size 6v battery in mine. It will fit in the original battery box but I don't use the lid.
One thing to check on your tractor is the condition/size of your battery cables. Mine only started with a 12v battery when I first got it (previous owner had a 12v in it). I bought a 6v battery and it wouldn't turn it over well enough to fire it. I had to get bigger/new battery cables. With the new 1/0 gauge cables the 6v battery works just fine.

Re: Battery Size for a 49 Cub
You don't really say if a battery is in it. If it is there and has three caps, it is a 6 volt.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.
