Patina finish

Postby Dusty B » Wed Jan 25, 2023 8:31 am

Would like to put a protective finish on my IH 100 manure spreader to retain the original lettering! Saw a post on another site that recommended Penetrol. Anyone had experience with that or something similar that would provide a clear sealer finish??? It does have surface rust but some color remains! :help:

Dusty, I see recommendations for Fluid Film. I think it will give you the look you want.

Vice Grip now has a wipe on clear coat for patina. Also has his patented shine juice that doesn't leave a greasy or sticky film. No idea on what it costs.

I love Fluid Film on my original '52 red paint and bare metal areas, BUT I would NOT recommend using it over any decals. Your painted lettering may be OK, but I found it would wipe off/smear original decals (not sure what they were...silk screened??)

(Maybe do a test spot somewhere)

I have used fluid film on under vehicles, snow blowers, ect. It's a little messy , but a good anti rust and good lubricant.

Lettering is directly painted on the surface - not a decal, that’s why I would like to save it! Do want a hard clear finish when done.

I would not do a clear. If anything happens to that you will have to strip and you will lose the patina.

Just to be clear here, wood or metal?

Some use a mixture of boiled linseed oil and mineral spirits (I think). I do not recall the mixture ratio.

I found this YouTube video a year or so ago. He gives a good demo on mixing and using boiled linseed oil and mineral spirits to preserve the patina. He uses a 32oz glass jar with approximately 3/4 cup of mineral oil and the rest boiled linseed oil.

Yea that guy has a formula, vice grip changes theirs a bit in his original he put some WD-40 in his. But again he makes a wipe on patina protector called his Shine Juice. It's a bunch of things, it wipes on and protects and makes it shine and is not sticky. This is not a clear coat it's like a linseed type oil based wipe on. He does have wipe on clear if one wants to go that route. It's probably a little pricey but it's pre made, and you can see it used on YouTube if you want D and D speed shop reviewed it. It's out there and it's pre made. Non sticky and greasy would be the selling point for me.
