Setting the blade in grader configuration

Postby ShawnAgne » Wed Dec 14, 2022 9:46 pm

Going to be doing some trenching in the yard and though about putting the blade in grader configuration to push the dirt back in the trench. However it got me thinking. Currently my Cub has turf fronts and ag rears, the 100 has 3 rib fronts and turf rears. I know for pushing much of anything the turf rear tires won't cut it. But will the turf fronts on the Cub cause me any issues? I know when plowing snow I sometimes lose grip.

Thanks in advance.

Dry crumbly dirt, probably would not matter.

Driving parallel to your trench in mud with the blade angled might give cause for the front end to slide on the opposite direction.

Driving perpendicular to the trench in the mud with a straight blade probably would not matter either.

My Cub has a turf front (really more of a trailer tire) and R1s on the rear. The blade that came with it doesn't have the linkages for a front mount. Consequently I've pushed snow with it in the grader position.

It's been a couple years since I've used it for snow but I don't recall it pushing the front around. If it did I'm sure I was able to easily counteract it using the brakes.

I have had a great deal of success using chains on my cub and 140 turf tires in the mud. I have flood plain and I have mud well into the end of April/May so they stay on well after the last snow.

I found the 3 rib front tire do help turn in the snow but straight on I agree little difference.

I have 3 rib fronts so I can’t really say but I’ve never really noticed much side slip. The mid-mount blade does a really nice job leveling an area.

I have both and the ribbed do well in soft snow and dirt in general but so do the smooth fronts. Neither do well on frozen surfaces. I found the whole tractor does better when gradually planing down rather than the abrupt push up against a pile or taking too big a bite because it wants to pick up or lighten the front end. Same with the blade in the front I would just figure it out and use either tractor

Thanks guys. Cutting the trench Saturday before the freeze for a solar install on the 29/30. But weather looks like we're getting snow on the 22nd unless they drop off the wire before the 22nd looks like I'll just hold off on pushing the dirt as I need to get them into snow mode.

I would put a blade up front for trench backfilling, and also be ready for snow

I was just going to post about that same thing. Was thinking that the only reason you put it in the middle is it is a stronger mount but seeing as how its loose dirt shouldn't push much harder than snow.

You will be fine moving loose dirt with it front mounted. I only use it under the belly for leveling large areas and tuning up the gravel driveway.
