Rare cub equipment

Postby JRS » Thu Nov 03, 2022 4:19 pm

Just got a 4ft brush hog. It is a pull type and uses the cub belt pully gear box as the mower gear box. It has 2 reversible blades on a round flat steel plate. It looks factory built . It has 2 iron wheels . The tongue swivels and uses a universal joint. The wheels say rapids standard not ih , gear box has ih on it. Wheels I think I see blue, gear box red rest is rust

that looks like a lot of mower for a cub. is it the correct spline on the drive shaft?

IMO that's a homemade unit somebody built from stuff they had sitting around. The PTO shaft looks like a standard 540 RPM shaft to me.

I have not seen that before for a cub. It may be for an A-140 and the shaft/yoke was replaced for one for a cub. If so the speed ( over 2 x) and rotation would be wrong.

Even if all that was worked out - That is a lot of mower for a cub. Also it does not look as if it has a clutch on the drive so the mower will keep driving pushing the cub when you push the clutch in. That is a lot of force to be pushing back on the cub through the PTO.

Just my thoughts.

Definitely homemade. Well made, but homemade. Looking at the materials used to make it and the quality of welds.

For those saying "lot of mower" it's no more than 48" wide. Without the skid shoes it looks like that deck would slide up between the wheel wells of that truck. Truck beds are typically designed to fit a 4'x8' sheet of plywood between the wheel wells.

Definitely not a "brush hog."

Matt , I have a woods 42 and a c-2 mower ( ~46" cut) there is a different i load between the two. another 2-4 inches will put some more. My biggest issue is there does not appear to be a clutch.

I have two three point bush hogs. I don't run them on the cub but one is 5ft and the other a 4ft. The smaller one is a Jbar economy model and the larger is a Bush hog brand Razorback which is their lighter duty model. I run them behind my Yanmar. Neither of them has a clutch. The drive line of the tractor and the gear box are protected by a shear bolt. They don't break everytime you hit a stump or soft ball size rock but hit something just right where the blade doesn't break away and soften the blow or is solid enough it will shear a bolt. I have broken one on each mower. Had the 5fter for like 8-9 years and the smaller one for like 14.

When I got the C-2 the PO had welded the clutch- I guess h did not like the clicking. Even with a belt that would push the club around. I eventually replaced the clutch so it would work.

I just started using a FH woods on a loboy. The same thing it

I also have a 140 with a 5' bush hog PTO driven and that would push the 140 around.

It is a big gyroscope back there. You have to be ready for it especially if you are in tight areas.

The whole lack of an overrunning clutch is another sure sign that it is homemade.

Pull type is definitely new territory for a Cub mower.

Not all manufacturers used an overrunning clutch. I have 2 early model BUSH HOG 412 mowers, neither have the overrunning clutch and the Owners/Parts manual do not show it in the lists of information.
