clutch there one minute gone the next

Postby inairam » Sun Jul 31, 2022 3:03 pm

I have a 74 square nose that hase been very reliable. I just rebuilt the spindle on my c2 mower and mounted on this cub. I cut for a bit and was happy with spindle.

I was some grass on a hill and all of a sudden I have no ability to engage the clutch. no slipping or chattering I thought the linkage broke or the adjustment on the pedal slipped. i looked inside the I inspection hole and everything moved.

any ideas why the cluch would fail all at once?

any ideas for a clutch other than tm or steiner?

the linkage moved when I pushed in the clutch when viewed from the inspection hole.. the peddle has pressure when you press like normal.

Maybe there is wear or a failure in the TOB yoke assembly.

Ricky It does not feel like a TOB bearing. There is no noise when you push the peddle in. No vibrations. The pressure feels normal.

Pushing the pedal in just does not do anything WRT the engaging the clutch.

Well, if your clutch is not slipping, doubtful there is any problem with it.

Did the adjustment screw come loose in the pedal linkage?

Check it and re-adjusted it no difference

Maybe some of the lining on the clutch disk has come loose and is now stuck somewhere that is binding the disk to the flywheel and pressure plate. You might be able to look up through the handhole to see if that is the problem.

Several years ago I was replacing the clutch and noticed a minor manufacturing irregularity. See below link. The springs under the clutch fingers must be in the proper location or fingers will not function properly. Being as your clutch is relatively new, it might be possible that one or more have worked their way loose.

Try this, on a level area put the tractor in gear with the engine off. Now see if you can roll the tractor by pushing and pulling on it. If it rolls the clutch likely broke, possibly the disk hub broke loose from the disk. If it doesn't roll then there's likely an issue with the linkage, TOB, or clutch fingers. The only way to know for certain, though, is to split the tractor.

I’ve had and seen, on several occasion, where the clutch lining fails and pieces of lining overlap themselves, causing the clutch to not release. It happened to me while unloading my Cockshutt at a show, backed off the trailer and couldn’t stop. It happens just that suddenly when you least expect it. Yours sounds exactly like that.

It does not roll in gear and it does not slip when running. I can start this in gear and it moves off the starter.

The linkage/ pedal pressure feels the same.
