Will a lawn and garden battery start a cub that has a 6 volt starter?

I use a 12v u1 battery as a mobile jump for my 6 and 12 v cubs and it does fine. I have not installed one in a 6-volt cub. You need a group 1 battery for it to fit in the box.
When you only have 9 horsepower you need to know the names of all of the ponies!

Well it was converted to 12 v but still has the 6 v starter. I don’t use it that much and hate to spend over 100 dollars for a group 26 battery.

Others have done it successfully. I haven’t tried it but the low price is appealing.

Magneto or standard ignition? If mag you don't need a battery. You can handcrank start it. If std ign you can use a lawn tractor bat to power the ign and again, handcrank start the Cub, that way you don't have to be concerned with pulling more power from the bat for the starter then it's designed to provide.

I put one in a long stripe in the spring of 2021 and it still is working fine.Forgot it was in there.Northern winters might be a problem for it.

I put a lawn and garden battery on a '55 LoBoy as a temporary fix and used it for a few years without issues. It was a used one and when it played out I replaced it with another one. It's been working fine for at least 3 years, starting fine, even in the winter when I pushed snow. I think I still have the 6V starter. I would get the highest CCA available as they seem to last longest. I also use a battery maintainer periodically.

Good luck,
David

It has a 12 v dist. Never thought of hand cranking it

Go to Wally World and get a group 26 battery for 55-60 bucks. Last time I checked that was the price

Just checked online. 58.74. Not trying to dissuade you from the lawn and garden, but the ones I’ve priced locally run pretty close to the $58 price

58 not too bad. Better than 120. I’ll check it out

Thanks

I think the last lawn mower battery I bought was like $30 or less at Walmart. Who knows what they cost these days with Putin's price hike?

Yes, you can get cheap ones. I was comparing the Walmart battery with lawn tractor battery that somewhat May approach the performance of the bigger battery

Oh ok.

As for the power of the Walmart batteries. I have several group 24 ones. One is about a year on and in a 3.0L v6 Toyota and has worked fine. I have a group 24 one from when they were $48.88 in my Yanmar tractor which starts that 24HP diesel tractor fine and I have another one in my Chevy k10 with a 350 in it. It's the side post version of the cheaper battery I forget that group number. It's about 3-4 years old the tractor one is at least 4. I also have one in the pontoon as my starting battery that's at least two years old I just don't remember...I think it's the classic Ford battery that was used for years I can't remember that group number. I think it has the most CCA out of the value line so i got it as space didn't matter. It's only starting a three cylinder two stroke 60hp Evinrude.
