Tips for replacing front tires?
Short of bringing them to a tire shop, anyone know any secret tricks. Bought some 3 rib tires and tubes and I see no way of getting them on myself. I have no problem paying for them to be done, but I prefer to do things myself. Is this a fools errand?

Re: Tips for replacing front tires?
Not a difficult job if you have a way to "break" the bead seal at the rims and the "spoons" or other suitable tools to remove the old tires and install the new ones. One pitfall for the inexperienced is it is very easy to pinch the new tube between the tire tools and the rim and have to have it patched. (BTDT). I'd rather have a professional do it and if there are problems you have some recourse to get it fixed. JMHO

Re: Tips for replacing front tires?
I buy tires and tubes from the local tire shop. They install the tires, included in the price.
If you do not have the tire spoons/tools, take the tires, tubes, and rims to the tire shop.

I have an excuse. CRS.

Re: Tips for replacing front tires?
I purchased one of these from Harbor Freight.
https://www.harborfreight.com/manual-ti ... re+changer
Mounted it to a sheet of plywood. (Didn't want to drill into my concrete)
It works, but does take a good amount of time to "figure out". If you go this route, there are some youtube videos with some good procedural tips.

I have one of those mounted in my barn. It works pretty good for car tires but have never had any luck using it on Cub front tires.
I bought a bench mount changer for small tires that is fairly decent.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Re: Tips for replacing front tires?
If these are the only two tires you plan on doing in the foreseeable future, pay the tire man to do it. Hopefully you have a small independent tire shop locally and you're not going to some big chain where they don't do tube type tires on a regular basis.
There is a little skill and technique to it. You really need a couple of tire spoons minimum to do the job yourself, assuming you have an air compressor. You could go totally hog wild like I have with several different tire irons, a mechanical bead breaker, bucket of high-end tire soap, and a "tire machine."

Re: Tips for replacing front tires?
I personally do not like the job and I do not have the changer.
I bring the front tires and tubes to my regular car mechanic and 1/2 the time he does not even charge me.
The rear wheels I bring to a truck/ equipment tire place. Most car tire stores will not touch them.

Re: Tips for replacing front tires?
I too have the HF changer and had the beads broken and tires off the B in a Jiffy, but it does take some figuring. I had always taken the fronts (and I mean at least 8 pairs) to the local Firestone where I do my cars and they always did it for me....usually charge me $20 every other time. I am with Matt....if it is just this set then don't bother with the hassle.
BTW, I ALWAYS put some Berrymans or Flat Out in every tire when I put new ones on and have not had a leak yet through all the bush hogging I have done.

At the co-op having them installed as we speak. Will mount them on the tractor myself. Lol

Re: Tips for replacing front tires?
I just did all 4 tires on my cub. Did myself so I could clean and paint inside of rims. Used neighbors harbor freight tire machine for the fronts to break the bead. He didnt have the correct bar so unmounting the fronts were a bear as they were very old and stiff. Rear tires were actually easier. spray bead with lots of silicone spray to unmount and remount with new. Also use baby powder on tubes so they slide easier. Neighbor told me this trick as he is a retired truck driver who did his own tire repairs on his trucks.

Re: Tips for replacing front tires?
I am out $27 dollars for the mounting. I would have paid twice that. Now to take it for a ride.

Anything 13" and under I do myself not worth running around. I still have a bumper jack from a 74 AMC Matador- works perfect to break the bead.
