Cub planter help

I picked up this planter at an auction this weekend and believe it has a POAX hopper on it. I can't find many options for seed plates and from what I've read so far most people recommend a richmond or combination hopper for more access to seed plates. I was wondering if I could just replace it with a richmond or combination hopper, or if any other pieces would need to be swaped out to make the switch. It looks like it should work just not sure if the hopper drive gear would work for either. Any pictures would be a great help as I'm pretty new to cubs and I've never seen a planter in person before this one.

poax is pretty limited for seed plates, combo or richmond offer much more and modern plastic plates fit also, you would need a different drive unit also to change hoppers, they are different for both

Tst pretty well summed it up. If you want to use your cub to plant a garden abandon the poax hopper and base and find a combination or richmond hopper and base. I use a combination hopper and it does a great job planting many varieties of seed. Plates are readily available and can be had for just a few dollars. Plates can be easily modified to handle different seed spacing so all you need to do is swap plates and not the planter drive gearing. This makes it very simple to plant a few rows of this and a few rows of that in very short order

Are we calling the combination planter the IH dual hopper planter with the corn and pea side? If so where are you finding a ready supply of plates. I see that many are made but I am not running across very many?

I can’t speak for tst but the dual sided hopper is not the one I was referring to. The combination hopper I use uses he same plates as the richmond hopper which can be iron or plastic plates. The plastic plates are the same ones that more modern IH planters used. They are readily available used on eBay for 5-10 dollars or less. Most are corn plates but they will also plant peas and beans and with a little j b weld or bondo and a dremel tool or round file can be modified to plant most any seed

No. The double sided hopper is the duplex hopper. Good planter, but plates are hard to find. Check out the manuals here on the forum and you’ll find more info than you want to know. Lol

Okay I've found a combination hopper and bottom for sale. By the drive unit do you mean the first picture of the piece that bolts to the tractor? Meaning I need a whole new setup?

The bracket that bolts to the tractor is universal to all the hoppers but each style hopper has a base specific to that particular hopper. If you look closely at the parts in your first picture it is actually two parts bolted together. The part with the ears that the hopper actually mounts on will have to be replaced.

The manuals will be a huge help going forward. I couldn't find the drive unit for sale online, but I called burch store tractors and they had one in stock. Thanks for all the help!

Yep I have the manual from here, seen the part numbers for all the plates , that's how I know there was a huge selection, but have only seen various corn plates and pea plates.

For anyone using a combination or richmond hopper the plastic corn plates are readily available and cheap on eBay. The openings can be filled with j b weld or bondo and new openings of the proper size for your seeds can easily be made with a dremel tool. It’s also easy to adjust your seed spacing by the number of holes you cut in the plate. That is easier to me than changing sprockets and then recalibrating my fertilizer hopper. I also learned to keep an eye out for sunflower plates and the associated filler rings. These thinner plates work great for squash, cucumbers and melons. Another trick I learned is to use the thin metallic duct tape to temporarily close holes on a plate to get the spacing I need with a plate I don’t want to permantly modify. Many people say a cub mounted planter doesn’t plant nearly as accurate as a rear mounted planter due to the long seed tube but it plants plenty accurate for me on my several acre garden

The company that makes the plastic planter plates is ⬇️
https://lincolnagproducts.com

The plates are also know as lustran plates.

Here is a link to their pdf of all the plates they make and the sizes and cell count!

I printed out the list for myself!

Lincoln ag has all the plate sizes listed and is a great reference tool if you are buying used plates. They also have some good cross references for plates to use for different vegetables. I sure couldn’t bring myself to buy plates from them at 45 dollars each though
