crankshaft rear main seal

Postby 5 Forward » Mon Jun 27, 2022 6:52 pm

I have a leaking rear seal on my 49 cub. I am not into epoxying the new one in. There was a thread saying someone was machining the seal retainer for a different seal. Is that still available or a new retainer the only fix.

Tim Talleur (forum name tst) still does it. Here's a link to his post in the Vine: viewtopic.php?f=223&t=113154

Need help had a leaking rear main seal. My son replaced it with a new one out of a complete gasket kit and put it all back together and it still leaks. Looking for suggestions for fix and or repair. Thanks

Your answer is in the post just above yours. Send your seal retainer to Tim Telleur (tst here on the forum) and he will re~machine it and fit it with an oversized seal. And welcome to the forum!

I got a new seal from Burchstoretractors.com and it fit well and did not leak. I know we like to support JP but if we can get a better part from Burch...

He is asking about the rear engine seal. I'm not aware of anyone selling an off the shelf seal that will fit tightly without machining the retainer (unless it's the later R2 retainer which might be what you have). What exactly did you get from Burch? Part#?

JP offers a seal and retainer that used together, are supposed to work without leaking. But the seal they sell will leak with a stock retainer as I understand it
