How do you lock the shaft to remove the pitman arm end attached to the shaft?
I put the cub in gear and engaged the pto but it just slipped on the belt.
I could not find any place to lock up the shaft to keep it from spinning.

You could try blocking the shaft against something solid (tractor/frame/floor/etc.) I believe Glen has posted on this subject not very long ago (I might be wrong, not surprised.)

I'm assuming we're talking about the bearing end of a pitman for a 22 sickle bar mower? If you're just replacing the stick, you don't need to remove the bearing. just unbolt the old stick and bolt in the new one. If you're doing something else, you're beyond my area of expertise.

Re: Pitman arm removal shaft end - how?
Hi,
I guess you meant the mower is on the Cub, that is a good place to work on it, to remove the nut holding the pitman bearing on.
The nut, and the rear pulley are left hand threads, you probably knew.
Turning them the normal direction to loosen right hand threaded bolts will tighten those.
To remove the nut, I block the shaft from turning at the front. Use a 2 x 4 the right length so 1 end fits in the cutout area of the front weight, turn the weight so the other end of the 2 x 4 is up against the bottom of the clutch housing.
It has to be so the shaft is blocked from turning the right direction, so the nut can be loosened.
Then put a wrench on the nut and give it a quick hit with a large hammer.
If the mower has the ball bearing pitman, the bearing may be snug or tight on the shaft it is on, and need a puller to pull it off.
I don't have the plain pitman bearing, so I don't know about those, if it just wears on the shaft, it probably doesn't get tight on the shaft.
Below is info to remove the rear pulley, if you need it.
Block the shaft from turning, like I wrote above.
I use a large box end wrench, or Crescent wrench at the rear pulley. A 15" Crescent wrench is good.
Put it on the pulley's place for a wrench so the wrench is hanging out to the right, about level with the floor. Then I hit the wrench out near the end with a large hammer, the quick blow usually loosens the pulley.

Re: Pitman arm removal shaft end - how?
My procedure is similar to Glen’s. I use a pry bar, place it on the beefy flat part(cut out) of the fly wheel and rotate flywheel so that the bar catches where the hanger is welded together at a ninety. The bottom part of that weld forms a neat ninety that catches the bar well. I guess that description may be clear as mud
Remove nut while on right side of tractor since it’s reverse thread and install on while on left side
Edit: and be careful not to bugger that nut up. Can’t go to the local hardware store and pick one up

I have found that a block of wood between the counter weight of the flywheel and the ground works great. Same with tightening it.

tom and glem I had a baluster ( a little bigger than a 1 x 1 ) that I cut. the big issue is I did not know it was it was a left handed thread until you told me.

Hi,
Glad you got the nut to come off.
jberens4020@yahoo.com It sounds like your mower has no guard at the front, or maybe you took it off to block the shaft from turning.
The guard is held on with 2 bolts.
Below are pics from TM Tractor of the guard.
