Hi,
If the main battery cable from the battery to the starter has the insulation rubbed off, and is against bare metal, there would be shorting, and sparking. That would happen with smaller wires too, when they have power in them.
You didn't say if the Cub is 6 volts, or someone changed it to 12 volts.
If the Cub has the fuse holder in the bottom hole on the dash, someone has changed it, or the Cub is newer than 1949. You could check the serial number of the Cub.
IH began using the separate fuse holder in the bottom hole on the dash during 1950, at serial number 115403.
They changed to a 3 position light switch then, which controls just the lights.
They changed Cubs to the voltage regulator then also, which is mounted on a bracket beside the generator. Your pic of your Cub is too small to see if it has that.
Below is a page from the 1955 Cub operator's manual, showing the dash, the fuse holder is in the bottom hole on the dash.

Re: Battery discharge mystery
That's a much better setup than mine. Still easy to fabricate from 20 or 24 gauge with a thin leather sleeve inside to prevent chafing.
Thank you for the images.

Re: Battery discharge mystery
Glen: It's 6 volts, and the serial number is 81866, making it a 1949. The dash must have been replaced.

Re: Battery discharge mystery
The fuse holder was added as Glen said. However, the dash itself was changed and had the hole for the fuse holder at serial 75926 or so. It looks like you have your original style dash but a fuse holder has been installed.
