half moon behind oil pan
I got the oil pan back on the cub. Now for the thin metal half-moon part that goes on behind it... Does it need a gasket or sealant? I see a gear (flywheel?) in the cavity it seals off.

That cavity should be dry. If you are seeing oil there that means one or more seals has failed, either the rear main seal on the engine or the input shaft seal on the transmission.
The gear is the ring gear on the flywheel for the starter.
