Oil filter spring?
Is there supposed to be a sping that sits between the top of the oil filter and the oil filter housing cap to keep the oil filter element seated at the bottom of the housing? I just did an oil change, there was no spring, and there seems like a lot of room for the filter to move.

Re: Oil filter spring?
There should be a copper washer to seal around the bolt, but no spring. I wonder if you have crud in the bottom of the bolt hole that is keeping the bolt from going down all the way.

Re: Oil filter spring?
Isn’t that the reason for the shoulder bolt? The smaller diameter holds it down and seals it

Re: Oil filter spring?
I have a new copper washer/seal for the bolt and the bolt screws all the way down to seal the filter cover. It just seemed like the filter could slide up and down on the bolt... Perhaps I didn't look at it carefully enough. I also have other tractors that have a spring that goes between the top of the filter element and the underside of the filter cover. I just couldn't remember if the Cub had one.

Re: Oil filter spring?
Hi,
IH used 2 different oil filter covers over the years.
The 1st cover was a cast soft metal cover, it was sort of flat.
The 2nd cover was a stamped steel cover, it has a higher shape than the 1st cover.
Below are pages from Cub manuals showing the covers.
The 1st page is from the 1949 Cub owner's manual, it shows the 1st style cover, the oil filter is a different style than nowadays, it looks like it doesn't have the top end that sticks out.

The 2nd page is from the 1955 Cub operator's manual, it shows the 2nd style cover. There is more room between the oil filter and the dome of the cover.

You can see where the bolt changes to the larger size in the pics, it looks like the filter could move up some on the bolt, but I'm not sure.
IH didn't use a spring on the bolt, that I know of.
On the 2nd page, at number 7, it says if the chamber is dirty, you can wash it out with kerosene. I use a long brush and wash the bottom also.

Re: Oil filter spring?
The filters smaller lower hole is designed to fit closely to the smaller lower diameter of the filter bolt, the upper larger hole is designed to fit closely on the upper portion of the bolt, no matter if it moves up and down a bit, it will still do it’s job.

I have been wondering the same thing but I just haven't asked. Mine is a '47 and it does look like it could move.

Re: Oil filter spring?
I think some filter models are taller than others? Don't recall #'s but My A has a tall filter case, filter is short and does have a spring that fits between the top of the case and the filter?? Some filters fill the case w/o the spring! Go figure!!??

Re: Oil filter spring?
Two different sizes of filters and cases were used on the A. The proper size replacement filter should be used, based on which case you have. Both size filters are readily available. No spring was ever installed at the factory.

Re: Oil filter spring?
Is there any difference in the cub or do they all use the same filter.
In other words is there a certain one that I need to use in my '47 ?
