Farmall Cub

Just brought home a really nice cub this time. Serial # starts with 159 and the rest escapes me. Lol. Came with a 90 degree pulley in great shape, a snow plow with original paint on the blade, a plow depth control lever but alas no plow. The owner started it with the hand crank. Had to put a battery charger on the battery. Now for the strange part of the story. He hooked the negative lead to positive post and positive lead to negative post. I warned him that was wrong but he said he did it that way for years. Then the tractor started and ran without the charger on. Comments on this?

Cubs made before mid 1964 had 6 volt, positive ground electrical systems.
I wasn't sure what you meant, you explained it below.

Do you mean he hooked the positive lead from the charger to the negative post of the battery? If so, then the battery has been reverse charged all this years. The battery would then have to be fully drained of power and correctly charged.

Yes he was hooking up the charger wrong. I’m curious if any other damage was done to the generator. I haven’t tested that battery yet. I installed one from another cub and the starter worked and it runs. Could generator be reversed polarity too?

You don’t often hear o battery’s getting reverse charged but it is possible, I’ve seen it before but not for a long time. Sometimes the battery can’t be saved but maybe it can. The battery has to be fully discharged and I mean really fully discharged then slowly start to recharge in the proper polarity. It’s hit or miss, sometimes they’ll take off charging, or they just don’t respond at all.

Had a miss in the engine. Put a little sea foam in the gas, hooked to my driveway chain link drag and had fun getting some seat time. The miss completely disappeared. I’m ready to give it a more challenging. Sea foam did wonders.

Well, I tentatively have another one bought for my retirement years. I will look at it later this week. It's a square grill, black stripe on hood, yellow and white, made in the 70's?
It sat out for a year, ran when parked, grandkids lost gas cap and birds built a nest in the gas tank. Lol. Has cultivators, mold board plow (might not have depth lever), and snow plow. Gonna give $1250, didn't think that was too bad a price.

I started my Cub acquisitions to work on after retirement. Well now I'm retired and I will never get around to most of them.

We have a CubFest here October 14, 15 and 16. You should mark your calendar and attend.

Why is it that there is never enough time to work on the tractors / implements, BUT always enough time to go get more!

That would be an interesting task: removing a bird nest from inside a Cub gas tank. Never heard of that situation before.

I would check the tractor serial number.
The yellow and white Cubs began at serial number 224705, which was in mid 1964. They had no black stripe on the hood.

The long stripe Cubs began at serial number 248125, which was in mid 1975.

The manual pics aren't color pics, so they may look different some.

People repaint them and sometimes put different decals on them.
The serial number should show you what it is, and you can find the year using it, unless someone has changed the serial number plate, or the plate is gone.

The square grill one he has may well be a long stripe. He never gave us the serial number for it.

Just got back from looking at another cub. Sn 250... which I believe makes it a 1977. And it does indeed have a bird nest in the gas tank. Or at least a lot of straw. Engine is not locked up, 12 volt system yellow and white, long stripe. Had a snow plow, cultivators, and a slatted mouldboard plow with joiner, Coulter, depth lever with dogbone. No wheel weights. I know you all want pictures, I have a buddy at work who will get me going on that. Give me a clue to it’s value. Or is there somewhere on here that does that?
