In my rebuild I have lost the plastic part that goes around center post of distributor, how necessary is it and can i crank and run it safely without?

If it's the part I'm thinking of, it's the one that trips the sensor and makes the system generate a spark. It won't run without that part.

If you're talking about the breaker cover, it is not needed nor will fit with Pertronix.
