Oil Level

Postby tarawa » Sat Jul 31, 2021 11:08 am

I just rebuilt my cub engine in the spring and really never used it. I just start it occasionally and let it run. It has new domed pistons, rings, valve guides and valves. New carb. I took it out to the field the other day and decided to see how it mows. I have never mowed with it before. It started smoking under load and about quit when I disengaged the deck. I thought it was a stuck belt, but it wasn’t. Drove the tractor back to it’s parking spot and forgot about it. My brother and I did everything by the book. I called my brother in Pennsylvania and he reminded me that I overfilled the oil and I should check the level. Well, there is the same amount of oil over the fill line as there is below it. I will drain the oils and change it since I was breaking it in with this oil. Hopefully the tractor will run smokeless. Another problem is that the exhaust blows out right into the Woods mower’s pulley (power take-off) guard and fumigates the driver….me.

You could put a vertical exhaust in it to put exhaust into the air. As for the smoke did you ever seat the rings in by running it hard! Just starting it every now and then for a little while won't really seat the rings.

I guess I should run it hard. No need to baby it.

Probably have the wrong muffler. The down under exhaust should use the "whistle muffler" that has a deflector punched into the outlet.

What weight oil are you using? In addition to the oil level issue, I have had smoking that using a 10-30 oil. I switch to a 15-40 oil and it reduced it a great deal.

Is the tractor smoking out the exhaust or oil filler tube?

If it's smoking out the exhaust, check the ignition timing and fuel level in the carburetor.
I have an excuse. CRS.

only the exhaust. I will check the carb. Timing is right on now. Since putting the correct amount of 15-40w oil in,the smoking is barely noticeable if at all. I am still in the breaking the rings in stage, I think.

My muffler is in great condition, so I will make a deflector foot mine.

I would run it hard, hard and harder at various RPMs to get the rings to seat well.
