Good source of parts?

Postby Shadow_storm56 » Fri Jul 09, 2021 1:29 pm

What's a good place to find cub parts? My yellow cub the steering box has so much play its like 3/4 turn of the steering wheel before catching. I think I need a new gear, not the one on the steering Colomb shaft but the other one.

I think I would exhaust all the other possibilities first, before I’d go swapping major steering components. Tighten the castellated nut on the vertical steering shaft. Check for and eliminate wear in the steering arm and tie rods. If you’re still not happy, think about replacing components, starting with the bushings. Do a search and you’ll find lots of discussion on these repairs.

Oh everything else is loose too like tie rods and such but the steering wheel shaft can turn 3/4 a turn each way before anything moves at all. Maybe some washers on the bottom nut to pull the gears harder together

The bolt appears to move up and down, maybe possible to tightly it. Gotta rip off the hair pin because it's mashed in there and I need a 23mm wrench because mines that size for some strange reason. Got all sizes around it but not 23mm.

Almost 23mm = 7/8".
I have an excuse. CRS.

you will probably fine when you remove the cotter pin and do not forget to loosen the pinch bolt on the back side that the castle nut will be loose, you can just push it with the end of a screw driver most of the time

Hi,
The play in the steering in the gear housing could mostly be because the 2 bushings are worn, the gears might be ok, but no way to tell about the gears without being there.

Below is a pic from the Cub parts manual showing the steering gear.

There is a bushing above the wheel gear, number 14 in the pic, and a bushing below the gear, number 18 in the pic.

Below are listings at TM Tractor for the bushings.

http://www.tmtractor.com/new/st/032fp.htm

http://www.tmtractor.com/new/st/1925fp.htm

TM Tractor at the bottom of the page has steering parts, tie rods, etc.

It needs disassembling and checking before buying parts, if you are going to repair it.
Don't tighten the nut at the bottom of the steering gear too much, you can't turn the steering wheel.
I jack up the front end so the weight is just off the front tires, then I can turn the steering wheel freely from side to side, to be sure something I tighten isn't binding.

A Cub uses USA wrench sizes, but you are in Canada, I guess, I don't know if IH used metric on Cubs going to Canada or not.

Hi,
Thanks Jim, I thought there was probably no metric nuts or bolts on Cubs, there's none in the parts manuals.

Canada didn't start taking any steps towards metric conversion until 1970. They officially gave up in 1985.

If someone else has had the steering apart in the past, I would check to see if the lower thrust washer fell off the steering wheel shaft into the oil cavity.

My guess if the lower thrust washer was missing you would see the steering shaft rise and fall when you change directions. It would have the steering wheel go up and down.

Yes, the washer, number 7 in the parts pic could have fallen out of place if someone removed the steering upper shaft, and put it in again.
The washer could be down in the oil.
The upper shaft would probably move up and down when you turn the steering wheel each direction. :)
