Underslung Exhaust Tip on Lo-Boy

Postby Winfield Dave » Sat Jun 12, 2021 1:30 pm

I wanted to prevent exhaust "soot" buildup on the drawbar, weights and the hitch receiver on my loader Cub.
Was going to see about bending some pipe but found this on Amazon for $10.

Sorry, it rotated the pics on me !!

That looks good. I don’t have the belt guard on for my woods 59 cause the exhaust goes right into it and I don’t like the idea of all the heat on the belt.
If I get one, I might cut the pipe to where the tip would butt up to the muffler.

She'll go 15mph now!

My 68 has the dreaded underslung exhaust! :(

Always fumigating me when I have to hitch something up! :(

Someday I hope to change that to vertical! :)

Every auto parts store carries turndowns as well. I would of got just a plain steel one so it didn't stick out as much but good idea to. It soot up your parts

Hey, Dave, I like that! Never realized "turn downs" existed. Think I'll go look for one...or 5!! I prefer the underslung exhaust, but that "soot" is almost impossible to clean off.

Thanks for posting. :D

Dave, Does your underslung have the "whistle" end on it?

Bob, no it doesn’t. Just a straight end.

Underslung exhaust IS great for fumigating...wood chucks.

Pull up, right to a fresh hole and drop a hose in from the tail pipe.

This remains my favorite muffler on a Cub. Works with vertical AND underslung exhaust, until the inner tube degrades from the heat...:

My only thought watching that inner tube muffler is that there's a sale at the Subaru dealer!

My Lo-Boy was switched to a vertical exhaust by the PO. I bought a new underslung pipe from TM to return it to factory. Looking forward to running it without exhaust in my face.
Incidentally a Lo-Boy muffler has a cut and crimp in it to deflect its flow downward.

I'm not sure it is doing any muffling, maybe the reverse.

I used to mow my grass with a 48 Cub, and dont recall any exhaust in my face, and at the time it was tired and worn out.

Maybe on the lowboys, the difference in the atmosphere at lowboy height does not let the exhaust go up and over your head!

My 68 had the crimped pipe end too, and it is not a lowboy!

That part of the pipe fell off, but I think I still have it somewhere!
