If you buy your coil from NAPA, insist on their premium " Echlin" line. They have a low priced line, just like all the other stores.

Re: need a recommendation for guality coil
I wanted to add that TM offers a 12V coil that I installed on a Cub about 2 years ago. I transferred it to my more frequently used Cub with the leaky NAPA coil. I shook it and is oil filled but it is not leaking. It is not USA made and doesn’t say where it was manufactured on the coil itself. Obviously, 2 years with no issues isn’t a long time but I trust TM. I’d have to be ordering more stuff than just a coil with the high cost of shipping today.

With napa and cubs I find it best to have the napa parts numbers and not ask to look up cub.. The ignition parts I have been getting from tractor sites have not been lasting very long. I stated getting all ignition parts from napa
for reference

both say NAPA ECHLIN.

Re: need a recommendation for guality coil
Having worked for a NAPA store for a few years. There is a difference in the quality of the parts. The Echlin boxed are the better of the parts. The major problem with that is the price. If you want a better quality you must pay for better. Yes they are a priced higher and for a reason. Most people have no clue as to what they are buying or need in parts stores. They follow the salespersons suggestions. Back when I started in the Auto parts industry a few years ago people asked two questions. Do you have it and what brand?? Now they still ask two questions. Do you have it and how much is it??

Echlin is not what it used to be, few years back they were bought out by Standard so many of the Echlin boxes are reboxed with cheaper Standard parts, yes they still have some good quality echin parts in some of the boxes

Thus, you don't know when you are getting a quality part versus a will-fit. That encourages the assumption anything is a will-fit, and buying on price. The downward spiral continues.

Yup and in my area 98% of the independent parts stores are gone, if you were a Napa dealer the company showed up and told the owners we buy you out or cut you off, your choice so almost every parts store here is now company owned

I always ask "Where was it made?"!
Because I only want Made in the USA parts!
I just wish everyone else would demand quality USA made parts too!!!!

Papa's Cub wrote:Yellercub, I understand your frustration. About halfway through last mowing season one of my cubs after about 45 minutes of mowing would start cutting up and as I stopped and idled down it just stopped running. After field cleaning the points and distributer cap it would turn over easily, but, not start. I, too, noticed the coil was super hot so I exchanged a coil from another cub and to my relief it started right up. Like you, I run from aftermarket parts unless it's absolutely necessary. So turn to a reliable company like N.A.P.A. or one of the many others that may be closer, especially one that is familiar with tractors. Hopes this helps and congrats on the cancer report. Good Luck, Tom
Huh?? NAPPA is aftermarket!!

I imagine with the only buy USA philosophy it must be pretty hard to fix some things...even talking automotive to stick with the theme. Not only is it expensive it would be hard to source some parts of you only buy Made in USA.

Pertronix makes a 12 volt Flame Thrower epoxy filled coil, search the internet for the best price.

Re: need a recommendation for guality coil
High output coils such as the Pertronix Flame Thrower are not recommended for points type ignition, they will cause component failure. They are fine for the electronic ignitions though.

This right here.
I prefer USA made but I even more strongly prefer that my stuff run. If an overseas manufacturer is the only one available, I'll take it.

Re: need a recommendation for guality coil
Maybe everyone else was aware of this but I wasn’t so I’ll bring it up. I searched past threads when I needed a coil and saw NAPA part # IC14SB so that’s what I bought. Made in China and started leaking oil heavily after 2 years. The part number for the Echlin brand coil is IC14. Made in Mexico. I’ve had good success with parts made in Mexico. It’s not the USA but at least it’s North America.
Probably due to a cheapening of Echlin parts, as Tim said, the price is now only a couple dollars more than the IC14SB coil. (Seems like I saw it used to be over $50 but this one cost me $37 after a Father’s Day discount). Due to shipping cost, with nothing else to buy, I couldn’t afford to buy just one item from TM.
