Distributor rotor pinion stripped of teeth.

Postby Jug175 » Sun Apr 04, 2021 5:14 pm

So I brought home a 1950 farm all cub or the 6 V magneto starter system. The wiring system was complete junk and there’s a ton to fix on it. I swapped out the wiring and plugs and wires but strangely couldn’t get it to spark. I took the distributor body off to check the inside for wear and I found all the teeth stripped off of the rotor pinion and a couple missing off of the distributor rotor as well. Although I can find a distributor rotor being carried by some parts places I don’t see one for the smaller roller pinion part. And if you have any ideas?

Hi,
Grease the gears, and align the timing marks on the rotor and pinion gears when you put it together.
The Cub owner's manual says grease the gears. :)

That is it thanks. Funny as it was greased, the teeth are all stuck in the grease. It took all them of of the gear an two off the cap. Would anything else cause it to strip the gears? I don’t want to replace it and strip them all again. Ill need to align the gears but wont I also have to align the the core too?

I would pull the mag and make sure it turns and "kicks" there are marks on the rotor and gear for alignment

About the only thing I know of, that will knock the teeth of the gear is if someone installed the dist. cap, slightly, cocked to one side. (cap not seated properly) The rotor tip strikes the contact tower and something has to give. It's not unusual to find those gears badly worn but teeth broken is unusual.

Thank you Gary, I was wondering about that. You can see all the teeth in the grease when I pulled it off.

On my first cub I bought a cheap distributor cap for the mag, and it cost me a rotor. The end of the rotor hit a contact for a spark ;lug wire and stripped the rotor teeth. Lesson learned.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!
