Paint brands

Postby Ben B » Thu Mar 18, 2021 7:35 am

Howdy folks. I’m getting ready to paint my 64 Cub. I’m not going for a show job so I don’t need to go to the expense of using an automotive paint. I don’t have a Case dealer anywhere close to me, so I’m looking at ordering it instead of buying theirs. And, Case will not ship gallons of paint. At least that’s what they told me.

I can order either VanSickle paint or Tallman’s Ag specialty paint and have it delivered straight to my house. Do any of you have recommendations of which of these two might be better?

(Majik is available to me but I’m not wasting my time and money on it. I do not like it.)

Thanks!

Try Messick's online. Also try Lilley International in Williamston, NC, Clinton Truck & Tractor in Clinton, NC or Southern Farm Supply in Union Grove, NC. I feel like (?) they would ship. Honestly, I would make the drive to a dealer, even if it was several hours away, before I used anything else.

Years back, several people recommended the Vansickle paint. I went far out of my way to find a vender and bought a gallon of Ford blue, the color was a mile off, we didn't use it. A flea market vendor, somehow, acquired many gallons of the Ag Specialty paint and was selling it dirt cheap, like $2 a gallon cheap! I had bought several gallons from him, Just to paint stuff around the place, including Ford Blue. It was a good match and I ended up painting that tractor with it, it turned out pretty good. That said, I don't know how it held up, he sold the tractor, and I still consider Ag Specialty to be a low quality paint. I have used some Vansickle since then and was not impressed. For your tractor, I would go out of my way to get the Case IH Iron guard paint. It will stay red much longer!

If there's a (pardon the expression) John Deere dealer nearby they make a decent IH red paint.

Hi,
TM Tractor has spray cans of Case IH paint, if you need those. :)

Ed, I thought about mentioning a J.D. dealer but just kinda hesitated to do that. I would likely do that here, the J.D. dealer has a drop off box, just a couple miles from me. I've used the J.D. paint, it was pretty decent stuff.

Our JD dealership moved out of town about two or three years ago. They were the last one. There’s not a single tractor dealer left in my county anymore. But, I wouldn’t be above using JD’s stuff if I was in a pinch.

I painted my 50 Cub with the old TSC Restoration Series paint 9 years ago, and it has held up pretty good. But it’s no longer an option. I believe using the correct factory paint for a change will prove to be worth it!

I suppose I need to start a restoration thread on the 64 six volt Cub here soon!

I like VanSickle paint. Both their IH Red and IH Blue are good shades. They seem to hold their color well. A few years of sitting in the sun and it still looks good.

just a note on the paint from IH, if you buy qts price around $22 ? or so, depends where you get it, buy the gallon around $65 so you can save a bunch of $$$

Are these paints daidingbin your sheds? Surely you people are not restoring or painting your tractors and then leaving them out in the sun after? I know UV will fade most any paints, but I can't really think of a situation someone would paint up a tractor and ken leave it out in the sun and weather? But maybe I'm wrong and am more paranoid about my stuff than other people?

Paint is protection from rust, the one sitting outside needs it more. Yes it will fade and weather and you'll be doing it again before the one in the shed. Is it ideal? Nope, but sometimes that's the only option.
