Governor Or other help

Postby feg7846 » Tue Feb 23, 2021 8:43 pm

Linkage to governor on my 47 cub was binding and not working as it should. The governor would not kick in when it needed to increase power. Took governor and linkage off, cleaned all of linkage, freed it up and lubricated pivot points. In the process, I removed governor and cleaned it and checked it out good. Put everything back together and started it up. Now, it will only go putt, putt at low rpm for about a minute and then shut off. It does not matter where I have the fuel lever set, it does same thing. Prior to removing governor, it ran very good at both low and high rpm, but governor would not kick in when more power was needed. So, what could be my problem. Any and all advice appreciated. :surrender:

Not good, that gear on the end of the governor will effect the timing of the distributor on the other end so sounds like your out of time now. I've been out of this a little while so someone will lead you the right direction soon.

Thhat may be the case, but I tried to be real careful and line up the "dots" on the gears to mesh for the proper timing. May need to check again.

Others please chime in..

Did you retime the governor to carb shaft?

If I remember right they're about impossible to see and we used to paint the teeth to line things up. Someone will chime in soon I'm sure and let you know. My guess is if it's running some your only off one tooth. Not sure, can't remember but you may need to pull the distributor to see from that angle.
Don't do that yet until you have more info from other members.

Do you have a Distributor or a magneto ? If it is a distributor all you need to do it bring no 1 cylinder up to top dead center on the compression stroke ,There is a pointer on the front of the engine line it up to the @nd mark on the pulley[ if it has 2 marks some do and some dont], then just line the rotor up to the no 1 terminal on the cap. You can time it with a test light. If it is a magneto the gears will have to be lined up correctly

Yogie, I think he is confusing the Distributor shaft with the carburetor shaft.

I know the difference between the carburetor and the distributer. The way I read his post is he had the governor off. It's in the manual. You need to retime the linkage anytime you remove the governor or carb. I said linkage instead of shaft.

I have a magneto and I am not sure which set of "dots" to line up. If looking from front of tractor, there are 2 dots on the idler gear and one dot on the front of the governor gear to mesh between the 2 dots on the idler gear. If looking from the back of the tractor with magneto off, there are dots on the idler gear and dots on the back of the governor gear. So, which do I line up.

Hi,
A 1947 Cub originally had a magneto.

Below is a pic of how the governor gear, and magneto, or Battery Ignition unit drive should be turned at number 1 cylinder TDC.
If it is turned wrong, the magneto can't be timed right, they have said on here before.

Turn the engine to Number 1 cylinder TDC, the single dot on the idler gear, on the side of the gear facing the rear of the Cub should be visible.
Align the single dot on the governor gear with that dot.

The 2 dots on the front side of the gear are for aligning with the crankshaft gear, that can't be changed with the engine together.

Below is a page from the 1947 Cub owner's manual showing how to time the magneto.

Below are pics from TM Tractor.
The 2nd pic shows the single mark on the left side of the gear.
The 3rd pic shows the single mark on the right side of the gear. :)

Yeah, I meant linkage instead of shaft.
In other words, You have to adjust, or time, the carb to governor linkage whenever the governor is removed.

Pretty certain he needs to perform both tasks.
1) Verify and adjust the timing
2) Adjust the linkage between the carb and the governor

I spent all day checking and rechecking my timing and governor. Did all as per the manual or advice from this forum. Still nothing but putt, putt then shut off.
When I originally took the magneto and governor off, I did not check the timing marks on the magneto and idler gear. They may have been set off a notch or two either way by the PO. I don't know.
Bad mistake on my part. With that being said, do any of you think that I should try moving the gear match up or back a notch and try it. This cub does have a lot of wear, but prior to me taking off the magneto and governor, it ran real well. Just looking for some help if you have any to share.
