Cub sickle bar belly mower

Postby Rambus » Thu Jan 07, 2021 4:32 pm

Have a question on the Cub 22 sickle mower, just picked it up and the control arm that runs from the square tube in front and a rod down the the mower to hold the bar out at proper angle has been broken and a piece welded to the rod. It looks to me that it is to short because it pulls the sickle way to forward not giving me a 90 deg angle for the pitman arm to run.
Does anyone know how long the rod needs to be?? From my measuring it's maybe 2In short making it pull the sickle forward to much.
Thanks :lost:

A properly set up sickle bar mower will have a certain amount of “lead” built into the adjustment. This lead moves the outer end of the cutter bar forward to compensate for flexing of the bar. Without a photo to look at, it is difficult to determine whether your lead is normal.

With the rod hooked up the amount of lead is at least 8 in or more, it is very noticeable that its way more than it should be. The rod has been welded and not sure how much it would have been shortened. If I set the sickle 90 deg like the books are saying and try to hook the rod it is around 2+ in short.

Since it's been modified shorter, it's possible who ever made the modification stuck the drag bar support in the right side (wrongly).

Hi,
The drag bar end should go in the left side of the square hole, so the mower works right.

A man I know said he had one that had been changed to go in the right side of the hole, I guess he used the mower that way, and he said the inner end of the mower bar wouldn't stay on the ground, it would rise up when mowing.
The geometry of the mower was wrong evidently with the bar in the right side.
He wanted to change it so it went in the left side.

I think the mower manual says the outer end of the cutter bar should be about 1" ahead of the inner end, when the bar is slightly above the ground, and I would think pulling to the rear on the outer shoe, to move it to the position it would be in when running on the ground cutting.

The inner and outer skids on the shoes are adjustable up and down. It helps keep the guards and knife bar out of the dirt and rocks to have the skids set so they hold the bar up some. There are adjustment bolts on both skids. :)

Yea, 8" is way too much. Maybe the rod is for a Loboy. I had one that was too short too and had to change

Photos would certainly help resolve this issue.

Thanks everyone, it is in the left side like it should be. I will try raising like you say and see if it changes it. what I'm thinking is when they repaired it that they somehow made it shorter. will do some more checking on it, got the winter to play around with it. just want to get it all set before I paint it. another question what is the paint scheme on this??
Also missing the rod that holds the sickle up in transport , thinking i can build a new one, just trying to keep it the way it's to be.

Several thoughts...
Unless you have the skills and tools to repair the drag link yourself, post an ad in the vine for a good used one. Tim Talleur (tst) makes a repro stay rod. Bob McCarty makes a repro stay rod nut.
There are many apps available for iOS and Android for manipulating photo size.

Here's Randy's sickle bar mower. The first photo is with the bar just above the floor as the repaired drag link positions it. Too much lead. The second photo is with pressure applied toward the rear of the tractor. The drag link is definitely too short, it seems.

Thanks so much for all the input!!
I have had the sickle bar mounted and have run the mower and works as it should. Have it removed and now need to get it ready to paint, as far as I can tell it needs to be painted implement blue.
Thanks everyone
