Starting issue

Postby Tractor Rod » Wed Jan 06, 2021 8:00 am

:help:

I just bought a 1949 cub and have a strange situation with the starter. I pulled it off and it works fine off the tractor when I wire it direct. Since the starter switch is gone from it I am just wiring direct from the battery. I have cleaned all surfaces so that the starter makes a good ground and when I reinstall the starter it kicks over once or twice but then quits working. I then have to take it off and reinstall and then it will kick over a little and then stops again. I keep wire brushing the surfaces thinking it isn't getting a good ground but can't get this fixed. I have literally had the starter on and off several times and can't get past this crazy electrical problem to see if this little jewel is going to start...............

Any advice because I must be missing something simple!!!!

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Have you opened up the starter, for a look inside? Your symptoms could be pointing to a bad armature (dead spot), worn out brushes or even worn out bushings. With a 6 volt system, good cables are extremely important as are excellent ground connections.

So far, Paul and Ringo have arrived. John and George were supposed to follow ages ago, but apparently have gone awol. Long story.

Just because a starter spins up on the bench does t mean it will do so under load, so the starter may be your issue, as per Gary’s post.

Another common problem is grounding. How is your battery connected to ground? If it is to the battery box or floor pan, you could easily have a bad connection from there to the engine. I’ve had much better results grounding to a transmission cover bolt.
Try jumping the starter directly in situ, providing both the hot and ground cables. Or try a voltage drop test to see where the problem lies.

You using big enough wire?
Plenty of juice in battery?

And as mentioned by Tim , off the tractor and on tractor/under flywheel load are very different conditions.
I paid for rebuilt starters. That eliminated my well worn starter issues. For now.
Being 6 volts, I had to go with bigger wire first on one , and a grounding strap on both eventually to get power flowing most effectively too.
