I opened up the distributor on my rough-running '55 Cub that I am starting to reassemble, and found one weight advance spring was off its posts. After cleaning the distributor, I put the spring back in place, but it seems to be rather stretched. Using some needle nose plyers, I bent the hook ends a bit to see if I could "shorten" up the spring, and it did some, but I am leaning toward replacing both.
I see McDonald Carb shows it, but I noticed (also read in previous posts) that their springs are good for numerous tractor models. Anyone have experience with their springs on a cub distributor? I emailed them, and hope to have an answer soon.
Brillman also has the springs (for less), but they also list numerous model tractors for them.
Anyone have advice on the best source? Thanks!

Re: Farmall Cub Distributor Weight Advance Springs
Some automotive distributor springs are intentionally loose like that- but not stretched, I think it allows the weight to start the advance at low rpm. Maybe by looking up the distributor number you can find it's advance spec's.

Hi,
Below is a page from the Cub service manual, with info about the IH Battery Ignition unit advance springs, it gives a part number there.

Below is a page from the Cub parts manual showing the Battery Ignition unit.
The part number for the springs is the same as the one above.

You could ask at Case IH about them.

With a magneto does the advance go to 13 degrees once started and stay there?

Yes. once the impulse coupling drops out (around 500 rpm), and assuming the magneto is timed correctly to the engine, then the cub should be at a constant 13 degree advance. There is no mechanism inside a magneto to "adjust" the advance, such as a centrifugal advance unit does.

Re: Farmall Cub Distributor Weight Advance Springs
I've encountered several with the springs stretched enough that the timing would not return to the static setting. A little tweaking, with needle nose plyers, tightened them enough to work normally. A cub spends, pretty much, all it's working time at full advance, anyway, there's no reason to be anal about it.

Re: Farmall Cub Distributor Weight Advance Springs
Jim, thanks... I did read several earlier threads, but missed that one. From what I have read, it does look like "one size fits all" is the state of things. Maybe what I will do is bend the hook ends enough to make sure the spring does not come off again, and just see how it goes.
I hadn't run it much before I tore the down...just enough to isolate/identify trouble areas, and this didn't even come up. I will deal with the springs IF it doesn't work right.
Thanks to everyone who responded!
